[rebel-builders] pedal distance from firewall

Post by Randy Riggs » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:58 pm

Ben,
Just measured mine, the hole nearest the firewall is at 6.75". I have the
witches hat inside as well and with the left brake fully depressed it's a
little less than an inch from the hat. Move it now, don't see any gotch's,
unless your 7' tall.

Subject: [rebel-builders] pedal distance from firewall

I'm wondering about preferred distance of the pedal tubes from the
firewall. I
drilled holes for the delrin mount blocks last night using the 5 3/4 "
setback
from firewall called for in the manual. Of course, I wished I was asking
this
before I started those holes! Using that 5 3/4" setback, it looks to me
like
the normal straight rudder position would have the pedals leaned back too
much to allow enough forward travel on the pilot side right brake pedal.

I had switched the firewall witches hats (inside one starts at pilot's
feet), so
the pilot's right brake pedal hits there pretty early. It seems that even
with
the normal witches hat configuration it might be too close too.

I think my cleanest fix is to move both left and right side pedal tubes
rearward by the distance of the hole spacing in the delrin blocks -- I
think
about 1 1/4" (i'm at work now, didn't measure last night). That way I'd
use
one of the two 3/16" mount holes, drill new ones for the rear of the
blocks,
and fill the unused front ones with 3/16 rivets up through the doublers.
Fortunately I haven't drilled for the doubler perimeter holes, so things
won't
be too ugly.

So, two questions: Have others found forward rudder or brake pedal travel
to be no problem at that standard position (5 3/4" setback)? Are there
any
other potential gotchas by my moving both pedal ass'ys rearward a little,
e.g.
1 1/4"?

Thanks a lot, as always,
-Ben/ 496R

[rebel-builders] pedal distance from firewall

Post by craig » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:58 pm

Hi Ben,

The three rebels I've been in had a pretty good aftward lean in the pedals.
This would seem to allow for enough forward travel. CW

[rebel-builders] pedal distance from firewall

Thanks Randy, Craig,
I didn't have any real time for it yesterday other than a peek. It maybe
didn't seem so bad considering Craig's comment, but yeah, I think I will move
them back. The stock (MAM) configuration would put the nearest mounting
block hole only about 5 1/8" from the firewall, being it calls for the right side
tube center-line to be 5 3/4" back.

Ben, I'm sorry I spaced your master cylinder photo. Out of sight....
I'm working today and will do my best to send it tomorrow. Craig
