[rebel-builders] engine selection

Some have done it... But you should read a letter from Darryl Murphy about
it. I would not do it but I am not a specialist.

Rebel 747R

Hi all,

I am within months or completeing a rebuild of a Rebel once ground looped.
It had an 0-320. Yesterday I acquired an 0-360 from a widow in exchange for
liquidating a hanger full of parts belonging to her husband. Has anyone put
the bigger engine on the rebel and what are the pro's and con's. The goal
would be to eventually put the plane on amphibs.

[rebel-builders] engine selection

Walter Klatt will chime in here at some point. He has an O360 in his
rebel and knows about the issues. He has been close to Daryl Murphy and
apparently the real concerns are actually using the horsepower to fly
faster than an O320 can push the aircraft. Increased speed results in
loading of certain elements beyond tested limits. By being sure not to
use the engine power for speed but rather apply it for takeoff -
especially off high density altitude lakes, Walter is able to use the
big engine effectively. After flying an O320 in a nearly identical
plane, the big engine is very tempting.

It's not just speed but weight as well. That is why I am interested in
what Darryl had to say. There could be a temptation to fly with more
weight with the extra HP partly because you will have less useful load.
The combination of extra weight and speed could quickly approach
structural limits.

Walter Klatt

[rebel-builders] engine selection

Post by Walter Klatt » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:54 pm

OK, here goes... But first, Happy New Year to everyone.

I have talked about my 360 amphib Rebel many times on this list, so check
back in the archives for more details.

But it summary, the 360 is way overkill for a Rebel on wheels, and you could
easily exceed the VNE. On floats, the 320 is fine for low altitude
operations, but the 360 definitely helps with mountain flying and higher
elevation (3000+ feet) lakes.

I think Darryl is most concerned with people pushing the maneuvering and
structural cruise speed limits of the Rebel. With the higher performance, it
is also tempting to overload the plane, which further adds to the risk.

I do have my firewall cut back 3 inches, so it easily accommodates the extra
weight of the 360 (probably about 10 pounds more). I also have EI on one
side, and now get better fuel efficiency than with my old 320.

It definitely made a big difference in water take-off and climb performance
at higher elevation lakes, which is what I was after. So I am very happy
with it.

Walter
