It is YOUR list server Mike, but with my W.W.II mentality (i.e. Lycoming
lover), this is my fear also. Will we need a training and users manual to
navigate, and will it be too complicated for "simpletons" like ME to use
(and/or will it be used)? When is the last time someone used the Flying
Rebels list that you were asked for?? Heck, I can't even get on the "ftp"
site that you keep talking about, to view the pictures.

But if you do go ahead with the changes I am definitely in for my share of
the $'s as this mail list has become a source, for a small amount, of
business for me!

Wow Mike!

We'll need training and a users manual to know how to deal with all the
new features,
imagine a weekly chat or even a chat meeting by mutual arrangement! Isn't
modern
technology grand. The logical searching of messages sounds great and for
me I would be
satisfied with being able to e-mail the attachment home to see it.

Sounds like doing the upgrade even at the basic level is a no-brainer, count us in for
the $2.00 (or $5.00 as req'd), it is so little for what you are doing for us that I can't
see why we wouldn't want to contribute.

Thinking about the archive, I don't know if it is an issue with the upgrade but I would
suggest not integrating the yearly databases in order to keep them a managable size. I
have searched the RV database and the portion I downloaded was too large for MS Word to
open!

Thanks Mike and keep up the good work!

Just thought I'd send a message to everyone updating you on what I've found
out about upgrading the list archives. First, here is the best solution
I've found so far, let me know if this sounds good to everyone...

Viewing the archives in your web browser you would see that a message had
an attachment, and you would be able to forward that message to your e-mail
address with the attachment... you would not be able to view the attachment
online.

Or, using special software that I would make available for free, you could
view the messages in a program very much like any other mail program, that
would let you download the attachments directly to your
computer. Additionally, this software would allow instant messaging
between users who may be connected to the system at the same time, and
there is also a feature for chat rooms. The software will run on all
versions of Windows, and Macintosh... sorry Linux users. The chat room
feature will work with any Java enabled browser, but no instant messaging
for Linux.

The search capabilities of the archives and available files would be
greatly enhanced also, since everything would be stored in databases
instead of flat HTML (read text) files. Boolean logic searches would work
(AND OR NOT).

There are many other features that may or may not be of interest, like
games... but I think this is the best solution for what we've been looking for.

Now, the bottom line... I spent thousands of dollars on this software in
1996, and I can upgrade it to the most recent version for only $50... and
keep it upgraded for around $150 a year. The only real hurdle is that I'd
have to build up another server and ship it down to Charlotte to replace
the existing one... this is not the kind of installation I could do
remotely. It installs from about 8 CD-ROMs. I already have the hardware,
I would just need to build it up and ship it. I figure that shipping the
new server down, and the old one back will run around $250... so for about
$300 total we can fix our attachment problem, fix the poor search
capabilities, and add some additional features that might be fun. Maybe
Bobp could lead an online builders chat once a month. There are currently
about 170 members on the list, so that's less than $2 a piece.

Let me know what you think, if there's enough interest, then I'll get
started on the next step.

Thanks, Mike

List archives upgrade

Post by Mike Davis » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:34 pm

Well, from the responses I got, it looks like nobody objects to doing the
upgrade, and some are downright excited about it. As for the few that are
concerned about learning something new... from the user stand point, you'll
still get them in your e-mail just like you do know, and responding will be
the same, only the archive interface will change. Viewing the archives
should be significantly faster since only 10 or 25 (I forget) messages will
be shown at a time, and the search capabilities will be much
faster. Chatting, if used will be simple also, since it will work in any
current release web browser, and most released in the last 3 years. The
additional software will be available for download on the site if anyone is
interested in checking it out, but it is not necessary to participate in
the list or chat. I will also provide basic user instructions for this
software on the site. The only other comment for keeping the current setup
is avoiding the extra work for me... remember, I'm not building yet, and
computers are both what I do for a living, and something I truly enjoy
working with.

I just checked and there are 168 members of the list, so $2 each would
cover it. Of course, I can't expect that every single member will send two
dollars, so if you take the time to send something, and you want to send $4
or $5, I assure you it will be used to continue providing the list
services, nothing else. I never intended to gain anything from this myself
except the knowledge I gain from the list. If anyone has any particular
questions or concerns, please feel free to send me a message directly

Mike,
You are to be commended for your hard work on this web
page. I think all builders and enthusiast learn a lot
from all the chat and discussions about the Murphy
line of aircraft.
While not a builder, but rather an enthusiast and also
other things, the cost of $2, $5, $10 or even $25 is a
small price to pay for the information we all receive
from this page.
If you would list your mailing address I do believe in
a very short time you will have enough funds to
continue your (our) expansion and continue with the
upgrade and not suffer the cost all on your self.
Thanks in advance for all your hard work.

I'm in Mike. Your $5us is in the mail. I don't like sending cash by mail
but most US banks won't accept canadian cheques. I don't know if I like the
idea of a chat room though because of the chance that many good ideas and
safety tips won't make it to the list or the archives.

1)

Mike,
After reading your address, I was amazed at the name of your
street! On
second thought, this must be a real popular name there!
Again, thanks for the time you spend. Curt N97MR

There are currently
about 170 members on the list, so that's less than $2 a piece.

Let me know what you think, if there's enough interest, then I'll
get
started on the next step.

Thanks, Mike
