Wayne, on the elevator control cables (moose) murphy used a machined
grooved steel insert inside the thimble for the elevator. Insert rotates
in the thimble .I would use this if it wasn't hid. this is a perfect
setup for rust corrosion and seizure and rotation on the bolt .I know its
there but if someone acquires the aircraft they don't. What did you change
this to .

Doug,

Is your concern that the insert rotates or that the thimble and insert are
dissimilar metals ?

Cheers,

Ted Waltman

[rebel-builders] control cable thimble

Post by Ted Waltman » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:49 pm

Doug,

I'm thankful Wayne is both willing and able to any many questions on the
list. I believe many folks chip in with answers when they have some
insight--and I certainly appreciate each and everyone's contribution.

I believe the part you are referring to is an AN111-4 (in the case of the
Moose) cable bushing as called for on page 35 of Chapter 12, section 95. If
this is indeed the part you are referring to cable bushings, to my knowledge
at least, are intended to rotate on the bolt. The thimble should be
squeezed tightly enough by the cable/nicopress assembly such that the cable
bushing does not rotate. If the cable bushing is rotating, one likely does
not have a tight enough/proper nicopress assembly.

AC 43.13, figure 7-14 shows a proper thimble/nicopress configuration.
Aircraft Spruce, if you search on AN111, says "Used in the same manner as
AN100 cable thimble." I've seen references (e.g. Wicks Aircraft Catalog,
page 49) where one uses a cable bushing to "...help eliminate thimble
elongation under load, thus maintaining correct cable length and tension."

Hope the above information is what you're looking for. I'd be happy to look
up further references pointing to the appropriate use of cable bushings in
this type installation.

[rebel-builders] control cable thimble

Post by doug wilson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:49 pm

My concern is about the whole planes surface controls. No bearing or proper bushing.Bolts through aluminum, steel bushing in brass.Planes in 1946 had better technology. When you look at every link and joint for the controls this thing is dangerous. And where I am concerned on this thimble,it is hidden, if there is no lube between the insert and bolt. The insert will eventually cut the bolt .There is constant pressure on the cable 30lbs. so wear on the bolt is hard to define .If it was anything but steel to steel I would not be overly concerned but to the unwary and left out in the elements and no lube I repeat dangerous I lost rudder one time on a real plane(180) ,it wasn't fun flying it with the doors .I never lost a elevator I guess that is why I am still here.Another concern Chapter 12 pge. 3 tangs attached to torque tube I used a offset No. 80 real chain link not something you can bend by hand. All bushing running in brass were made out of stainless. For insert i wish to replace it wit
h a sealed ball bearing

1/4 inch bore if anyone has done it I would appreciate where you got it.I will Sleeve the outer race and machine a cable groove around it

And by the way no offence wayne i give my information for free so nobody dies .What do you charge for your professionalism if you don't know say so .

Nope life's too short to put up with it... I know that all too well right
now.

There's a handfull of guys on the list with a combined 200+ years of
building experience that try to help other builders along with their
quest.... and we get flip off remarks from those that have never built
before. Anyone notice that there are less and less responses from this
"handfull". I'm gonna go join them and use the extra time to spend on the
couch with the wife.. or building project X in the shop.

All the help and advice from all sources IS appreciated by those on the

As I was browsing through the forum, this particular blog caught my attention. What was
said that was so offensive? I too would like to know Wayne's opinion on the mickey
mouse control system, seeing as how Wayne is a premium builder, it looks like thats why
this builder clearly asked him the question. That poor guy, we will probably never hear
from him again! He sounds like he has a good grasp on catching very poor engineering,
because I too am running into the same problem with the pivot points.

Sincerely,

Art,

After things like this have subsided, It is best to let them go by, rather
than resurrect something that was interpreted as offensive by some, and in
this case, perhaps many. Where offense has been taken, if the issue is
resurrected and dissected over and over -- offense will be taken again,
sooner or later, by someone. If you really must have an answer on the
offensiveness, feel free to write me direct - OFF LIST - and I'll not be shy
about sharing my take on the matter, in private. Similarly, if the original
writer really didn't understand what was offensive, there's no reason he
can't write directly to Wayne -- OFF LIST - offering an apology, whether the
offense was understood or not.

As to the substantive question, regarding thimbles, if you read the thread
further, as I recall you'll find at least one good answer. If not, I'm sure
someone will answer that question, if possible, but IMHO, it will not serve
the group to dredge up and/or debate personal reactions on the list. Let's
not.

Regards,
Ron

[rebel-builders] control cable thimble

Hey, guys, this is Xmas. Let's just be thankful we have this list and guys
like Wayne who is super knowledgeable about the Rebel and the Murphy
products. It is also very unfair to Wayne, just because of his knowledge and
his business to ask or expect him to provide all the answers.

Most of us who have been around for a while owe a lot to Wayne for all his
help, plus he is a really great guy too, if you ever get to meet him in
person. The newbies should read the archives a bit so they get a better
appreciation of this, and hopefully give a little more respect where it is
due.

So hope you don't take offense to this post, but I couldn't sit back when I
saw this. This has been a great list for helping us better enjoy flying and
building our airplanes. Let's keep it this way.

Walter
