[rebel-builders] Seat Rail forward/aft location

Post by Walter Klatt » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:21 pm

Don't have the measurements handy, so hope someone else can give them to
you. But can tell you that on my Rebel, I wish I had placed them further
back, or at least lengthened them at the back. I have had a few "big" guys
have real difficultly getting in and out of my plane.

Hello all

I am installing the cabin floor and seat rails and according to the manual
the "Exact measurement from the control column to seat rails depends on the
customer" I have checked the List Archives but everything I found deals only

with the left to right location of the rails not the forward /aft location.
I am 5'- 8" tall but would like the seats adjustment range to fit as many
people as possible. Could anybody suggest what that dimension might be for
the average height pilot?

[rebel-builders] Seat Rail forward/aft location

Post by Drew Dalgleish » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:21 pm

I put the seat on the middle of the rail then put it in the plane and
climbed in and adjusted it for me. I'm 5'7" and it's worked out well. The
guy that flew my plane on it's first flight is 6'10" and had no problem
fitting. The passenger seat goes far enough forward so that young eagles
can reach the controls. Just make sure to install the stops at the end of
the rail far enough forward so that you can still reach the controls with
the seat all the way back. Some cessna crashes are from the latch failing
and the seat sliding back too far. There's an AWD that requires stops to be
installed.

Ian Donaldson

[rebel-builders] Seat Rail forward/aft location

Post by Ian Donaldson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:21 pm

G'day Charlie

I also puzzled over the placement of the controls and the seat rails, but what I
did was to simply purchase extra pieces of seat rail, and place them so that the
extremes of range were covered.

This allows for all sizes of pilots to get comfortable and it has the added
bonus of allowing the seat to move a long way back which makes entry into the
cockpit so much easier.

I placed the control column just where the manual says and everything works just
fine. Of course the shape of the control sticks can be varied to suit individual
tastes, but I left mine as standard.

Regards

Ian Donaldson

[rebel-builders] Seat Rail forward/aft location

Thanks to you guys for the response to the seat rail location. I think I
have a plan now on how best to locate the rails, if I ever get done
installing those @!%#* angles between the bulkheads and the floor channels.
The interior floors have got to be the most boring, back breaking,
aggravating job in the whole kit.

[rebel-builders] Seat Rail forward/aft location

I hope you're right Charlie about the floor channels being the most
aggravating, etc. I'm back to finishing that off now after doing the work
forward of the cage carry-throughs. Finishing off meaning, drilling up
from #40 to 30, deburring, and riveting. It's just a stinkin lot of holes
and pieces. Got to decide between doing taxes or riveting this wknd. I'd
still rather do the riveting. ;)

WALTER KLATT

[rebel-builders] Seat Rail forward/aft location

Post by WALTER KLATT » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:21 pm

It's been a quite a long time now since I built my Rebel, but still remember well going through that same endless tedium with the all the channels and pieces on the fuselage. I eventually learned some of Wayne's tricks to reduce the separate L pieces and rivets, which definitely saved a lot of time. And just keep plugging away, every day a little bit if you can at home, and eventually it's done. Worst thing you can do, is put the aggravating stuff off for later. Good luck, though, sounds like you're making good progress.

Walter
Your are right, I should know better, this is my fourth aircraft project &
like I told Tim I was just venting some aggravation so I don't start
throwing stuff and denting aluminum. I should be thankful that I am this
far along.
Thanks for the help.
