Subject: [rebel-builders] I have a request

I don't know if this is a good idea or not, but I will float it anyway.
Sometimes I have a question that I would like to ask a member of the
builders group directly.
But I hesitate to use the group email address because I don't want to
burden
the list server with something that only I might want to know. And,
sometimes the subject that interests me might be less than well received
by
others.

I have some email address for some of the group, but do not have others
that
I would like. I have poked around on Frapper a bit, but don't find what I
would like there.

I hope no one thinks that I am trying to cut anyone out of the list,
because
that is not my intent. Actually, in this case, I want to ask Jim Cole
about
his Rebel, the 3 inch extended motor mount, his c of g, and empty weight.
But I don't have his personal email address.

So, those of you who do not object to taking a direct question from me,
please send me your email address.
Mine is

[rebel-builders] I have a request

Hmm... I was going to point out that there is a RBL address book link on the
archive site, but it doesn't work. More disturbing is that when I started
looking into it, I don't even have the applications required for it to work
installed on the server. Now I have to ask myself how long it's been since
it has worked properly, because this server has been running stable in its
current configuration for quite some time.

Anyway, I don't know if I have a backup old enough to recover the database
for the address book, but I will look through my stuff and see... and I will
get the required applications re-installed and configured this week to get
the address book working again.

[rebel-builders] I have a request

Post by Ron Shannon » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:16 pm

Tim,

I had a brief off list exchange with Jim C. about this as did Joe Ronco, I
believe. I'm sure Jim will show up to add/correct, but in the meantime, the
info I got was that with the Rotax 912S 100HP on the standard MAM mount for
the 912S, he found his CG was further aft than he wanted it, at the aft end
of the allowable CG envelope. The change to a custom mount, 3" longer, put
his prop flange at about 38.5" (I believe forward of the leading edge
datum?) and his CG went to the middle of the envelope so that he's now about
to carry 200 lbs. of baggage without worries about aft CG. He certainly was
able to carry a lot during the '07 Rebel Ramble. No doubt, Jim can add to or
clarify this. I think there may be other stuff from him about this in the
archives too.

I was interested in this while playing with some calcs for two different
mounts that are available for my Jabiru 3300. I got bogged down before
reaching any specific conclusions because it seemed I needed to know the
CG's of the two engines (912S and 3300) themselves to compute any specific
comparisons, but could be wrong about that.

Ron

Jim Cole

[rebel-builders] I have a request

Post by Jim Cole » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:16 pm

Hi Tim, and Wayne - there's no real secret!!

When I was exploring the use of the 912ULS, (I had been flying that motor
on a SportStar) I felt that it had enough HP and thrust to build my plane as
an Experimental registering it at 1650 instead of going the Ultralight
route.
I believe that the 912 mount from Murphy was designed to keep the overall
weight down in order to meet the Ultra Light classification so there really
wasn't too much need to allow for a lot of baggage behind the seats. By the
time you put full fuel and two people into the airplane you would probably
be over the 1200 lb gross weight. It was my feeling that the UL version
would have an aft C of G and not allow for a great deal of baggage.

Since the 912 ULS was very light by comparison to most other engines of
similar HP, I explored the idea of moving the 912 away from the firewall.
Daniel Sasseville who has built and flown many Rebels and is the Eastern
Canada rep for Rotax, worked with me to calculate the effect on the C of G
by moving the engine out. We found that 3 inches put the C of G just about -
right in the centre, of the Rebel envelope. I also wanted to use the heavier
Scott 3200 tail wheel which added about 4 lbs way out at the tail.

My numbers turned out as follows:

empty weight - 821
C of G - 12.75
Baggage allowance - 200lbs - at gross which put the C of G - 17.43
(nicely inside the 10.85 to 18.10 Rebel C of G envelope)

From an esthetic point of view - by moving the engine out 3", I feel it also
gave the airplane a nice balanced look.

I hope this helped Tim. I would be happy to answer any other questions.

Cheers
Jim R333.

[rebel-builders] I have a request

Post by bransom » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:16 pm

For the record, I found both questions (912 motor mount, washers) and both
answers (how, and alcohol) very worthwhile. IMO, don't be timid about
asking a question, because time and again, at least someone else will be
grateful for it. I hadn't even heard that others were moving the 912
further forward, and glad to know about it! The alcohol builder's tip
...well yeah, guess I've used that one, but good reminder!!
