Good to see you taking advantage of this great weather we're having these
last few days. I will be flying out to the lake tomorrow, and I think it
will stay nice for at least one more day.

I have been thinking of strapping a camera to the strut one of these times
and trying that. I am hoping my remote from inside the cockpit can turn it
on and off.

Thanks for the comments. I keep laughing each time I see the video and how
well it worked for such a half-assed effort. Whenever duct tape is involved,
your expectations for success should be very low.

Thought I'd share some details about how I made the video and tips for
viewing it on YouTube. I've never really watched stuff on YouTube, so I'm
not an expert. YouTube normally shows low quality videos, but with a bit of
magic, YouTube can also show higher quality videos. The link below takes you
to the same video that I posted previously:

If your connection to the internet is fast enough and YouTube determines
from your browser that your computer can display higher quality videos, it
will place "watch in high quality" on the bottom right side of the video
image on the YouTube webpage. If you see this, click on this text with the
mouse and your video will be much better.

But, if YouTube thinks your internet connection is too slow or computer not
up to the task, then it won't even display this option and only show the
video in normal (low) quality. This is all under YouTube's control.

I made the video using a Flip Ultra. This video camera is about the size of
a deck of cards and weighs just as much. It is stone simple to use and
available from Amazon and other places for under $100. I have the version
that records for 1 hour. I just turn it on and go flying and see what I get
when I land (hoping it is still taped onto the airplane). Kinda like
fishing.

They now have more expensive models with better quality. But, since I am
using this for flight testing and treating it very poorly, I wanted to
invest the smallest dollars. I'd really hate for it to fall off or go for a
swim, but if it does, I'm only out $100. I plan to use it to record tufting
tests, watch amphib wheel shimmy, landing technique...and mostly have fun.

I'm working on the new camera mount; on the front of the floats this time.
I'll post my results...if the camera survives. Next time I plan to wrap it
in saran wrap so that it is "water proof".

What elevation is the lake you go to? Must be low since it won't be frozen.
I can't wait to get into our higher elevation lakes down here in Washington.
What lake do you fly into? I'd like to check it out on Google Earth.

I couldn't go flying on this last nice day, hope you got out. I had to do
some exhaust maintenance. Slip joints on both sides are leaking and needed
some attention.

Done building, right into maintenance. Actually, the airframe is great, just
been minor fwf stuff now that it is flying.

visit by another Elite, Dennis.

It is Harrison Lake, elevation about 40 feet, never freezes. Here is the
google link, and you can see my plane at my dock, too. You might have to
copy and paste it together a bit.

Link worked great. Nice that the satellite captured your plane. Harrison
Lake looks spectacular and I've heard of but never been to the hot springs.

I installed the transponder and also the new fangled 406MHz ELT that Canada
is requiring soon if not already.

Insurance is okay too.

But, I may need to bring duct tape along to make 12" N-numbers. Canada
requires these for border crossing but probably doesn't care. The US will
probably shoot me down without them. You know it is a critical national
security problem when duct tape is the solution. Just kidding for folks that
take this serious.

Well, sounds like you're OK then. I found it easier and faster to get
through customs by private plane, than any other way. I usually come back
through Abbotsford, and they haven't once yet come out to my plane to even
check papers. I just call the number, and they give me their confirmation
number, and I move on. I think with the flight plan and advance customs
notification, they already know all about you before you arrive.

The only place I ever got searched was Piney Manitoba, about 5 years ago,
and I think only because it was quiet and they had nothing better to do.
They were all friendly and everything, and were more interested in the plane
and my building it, than giving me the 3rd degree. But it still cost me at
least half an hour.

I have heard that Bellingham can be a little nasty if everything isn't just
right, or if you are not within that 15 minute window. Still remember Bruce
G., a number of years ago, forgot both his passport and birth certificate,
but they didn't send him back.

As for numbers/letters size , don't think all the AB's in Canada have that
right either, but have not heard of anyone having a problem with that. Big
thing is your paperwork, insurance, etc. And if you carry a gun, that needs
special paperwork and advance declaration. 406's aren't required here yet,
and when they are, we will have a couple extra years to comply in the south.
Might be tough to get to Alaska, though, without one.

Have been trying to talk your buddies, Steve and Dick, at Arlington, into
coming up here for years. You guys don't realize how close and easy it is.

In the summer, definitely some beautiful higher alpine lakes nearby to
visit. You'll want a good camera for that. But even in the winter, all the
lower elevation lakes here are open.
