pulleys & engine mounts

Post by Jones, Mike » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:27 pm

Hi All

Can any one tell me what pulleys and brackets come with the rebel kit as i
have none. I need all part numbers and quantities ???

also the engine mounts in mine are fus 17 while new manual shows a two part
assembly of fus 86 & 87, should i upgrade, has anyone seen this situation as
of yet??

next problem the floor in my rebel has 4 sets of stringers running the
length of the fuselage instead of 3 as shown in my manual, no big deal
except for all the extra st-40 angles i have been installing, what a pain.
However not all the stringers have been trimmed back to the edged of the
angles that are perpendicular to them, instead they extend inside the angle,
can i leave these or should i try to trim them out, not easy to do
however???

pulleys & engine mounts

Mike,

My repo kit #357 has no pulley's either but the new CD manual does have
pulley and brackets for the "elevator" cables, I believe. The part #s are
fus 254 left and right, and two pulley's MS24566-3B. They are attached at
bulkhead D if memory serves me correct. A call to MAM confirmed the change on
later Rebels. I don't know how necessary they are as I'm sure lots of Rebels
are flying without them. Maybe Wayne, Bob or one of the other more
experiences builders can comment on their necessity. I plan on ordering new
ones myself.

Bob Patterson

pulleys & engine mounts

Post by Bob Patterson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:27 pm

Bruce, and all,

The pulleys are absolutely required to be legal in Canada -
the inspectors look for them ! They do go at the rear of the floor,
as the angle of change there is over the 3 degree limit. Some
builders have also used pulleys at the front end of the elevator cables,
and for the rudder cables in places, as well !! One useful trick
is to add an extra inch or so of tubing to the outboard ends of the
rudder pedals, to move the cable connections outward. This reduces
the angle to the first cable guides, and gives a bit more space
up front, too ! (might help avoid having to add pulleys to satisfy
an inspector !)

Rebel number one still has ONLY the original Delrin guides,
and doesn't show much wear (the cables are shiny, after 850 hr. !)
- but this setup is no longer allowed ..... I'd be surprised
if there's more than one or two Rebels now flying, that don't have
pulleys. It should make the controls a bit lighter & smoother,
and extend the life of the cables.

pulleys & engine mounts

Hi Mike !

The original bent sheet mounts are working just fine in
#001 - should be fine for a 912S. I wouldn't bother changing
unless you've removed the firewall already...

Not sure about the stringers - maybe you could bring a few
photos to the builders meeting on the 12th. Hard to visualize what
you are dealing with. I suppose you could trim the extra metal with
a Dremel cutting wheel ...... if necessary .....

They don't seem to be a functional neccessity on the Rebel, but an aircraft
will not (should not) pass final inspection without them due to the large
change in cable direction at the back. You also need pulleys because of
this, at the cabin to cone junction, on the rudder cables. Any change of
direction greater than 5 degrees requires pulleys to meet acceptable
practices.

pulleys & engine mounts

Mike
FWIW I made sure mine did not touch which I think is what the manual is
asking for. In my mind there will always be some vibration and flexing
(literally as well as at the stringers) and I didn't want the stringers
(floor channels) cutting into or nicking the bulkheads.
