Like you say space is limited so it makes sense then to hang the engine and cut holes later.

Don't I wish I was finished! We have the engine hung, oil cooler mounted, battery on firewall, and most wiring and control cable holes drilled. No, I did not try to follow MAM directions as we have made too many mods for them to apply. From my point of view, the firewall holes are better made after hanging the engine so clearances are assured. The dynafocal mount from MAM has much less clearance to the firewall than other dynafocal mounts I have seen. Positioning the oil cooler is an example. Mine has just enough clearance to work and I hand made a plenum.
We use a spin on oil filter mount from B&C. With a 1 1/4" spacer from them it just clears the mount and firewall. Viewed from the pilots seat the fiulter is parallell to the firewall at about 10 oclock. A remote mount would use additonal scarce firewall space and introduce more leakage opportunities.
We are using flexible "eyeball" cable safes in the firewall as they allow minimum bends in the bowden cables.
