New Rebel with spring gear

Congratulations, Charles !

A good question - hope you get lots of feedback !! I'm
still VERY happy with the bungee gear - (and Wayne's die spring mod.),
and it IS 28 lb. lighter .... :-)

One thought - if you've gone to 8:50 tires, the larger diameter
will amplify gear problems, as this has the effect of increasing
the braking arm. <My> preference is the DICO 800/6 fat "turf" tires -
they are wide and soft - good for rough terrain. They don't wear
well on pavement, but are very cheap to replace, and last forever
on grass.... (They also make my landings look much better ;-) )

Bob,
I'm thinking about trading in my original Super Rebel tires for the 8:50 x
8:00 Outback tires. What do you mean by "will amplify gear problems"?.
You've got me concerned on potential problems. Perhaps your concern is
isolated to the Rebel?

Bob where do you get these tires? I've wanted to put bigger tires on my
rebel for a while but the price of even aero trainers is to much for
something I didn't need until Wayne inspired me with his tales of landing
on beaches etc. I had my first landing in a cut bean feild tues. Its a lot
of fun dropping in on freinds this way but it sure is rough with my little
6:00x6 tires

tires, Elite corner wraps and deleted the wing/empennage tips )..delivery
in a week or so.

I'm looking for some more Cleco's (mostly 3/32) and a metal
shrinker/stretcher...if any ex-builders would be interested in selling
theirs.

Drew, I did these landings with 6.00 X 6 tires AND my wheel pants still
installed! Would have been better with a set of 29" tundra tires though, but
all and all still possible on a well packed beaches water line.

Hi Gary !

Maybe it's not a BIG problem, but going to the larger diameter
tire has the effect of lengthening the gear leg. This gives a longer
arm for the braking forces to twist the mounting assembly & the
fuselage....

This situation affects ALL aircraft - you can see the problems
on old Cessna 170's, right through to the Rebel & Super Rebel. Anything
that changes the loads on the structure CAN be important - see Darryl's
notes on the Murphy web site about the way "a patch here, and a patch
there" can snowball....

It seems that almost all of the gear problems we hear about
are the result of BRAKING loads, rather than the bouncing of LANDING
loads. Given that, any change that will increase braking loads
deserves some consideration.... If the bigger tires are to be used
in soft grassy terrain, and the brakes won't be used heavily, or
at all, then there might not be a big concern - but if they're
used on pavement, and you plan to brake really hard on one side, to
make the first turnoff, and then spin right around and take off
again, then you might be loading the gear pickups to the point where
you might see failures in the supporting ribs or spars or boxes.
There certainly are enough of these cracks in older Cessnas !

Don't worry too much - it's just another thing to consider ... :-)

Hi Drew !

You can still order the DICO tires from Murphy - they're
standard on the Renegade. You'll need the matching tubes, too.
You can run them fairly soft - about 12 - 14 lb., for rough
ground.

Don't quote me, but I seem to recall they cost something
like $39.95 each - so I don't mind putting a new set on every 3 years
or so !! :-) :-)

It really IS a lot of fun dropping in to fields - when I
learned to fly (back in the '50's) we often looked for a restaurant
with a large back yard, and landed for coffee !! It helped that the
fellow I flew with a lot was a truck driver, and knew all the good
spots !! We've landed on gravel bars, hayfields, sand, and LOTS
of unlikely places - that's the beauty of having a Rebel !!! :-)
(One spot was a road through a gravel pit - with the 400 ft. deep
pit on both sides - had to go to a turnoff & lift the tail by hand
to turn around to leave !!)

I cannot quite understand your question about spring gear. Can you please
rephrase. I have 189 hours now with zero problems with the spring gear.
However, I do not fly into rough areas as Alister seems to encounter on a
regular basis. Must be some country you fly in Alister!

With the difference in price between an O-540 and the M14-P, you could buy
a quick build Super Rebel, and still have money left over for other stuff!

Very lovely country Brian! Most of the strips are very good, and some are
not!

My Rebel has just been away for three days with a friend, he did about 8 hrs
around Fiordland, he had a ball landing on beaches, river beaches and
riverbed strips etc. I had to admit I was quite envious. He struck a very
good patch of weather in between a lot of rubbish we have been getting.
which is the downside of living in a small island in the Southern Ocean!)

The old girl is holding up to it very well now and is going like a dream
although appears to be a little susceptible to carb icing, any one else
notice that with the standard 0-320 setup?)

I have to say I am really getting soft on the idea of the Super Rebel with
the M14 radial, that would have to be the ultimate Bush plane! I have flown
behind that motor in Yaks and they are a great motor, although I dont know
how my wrists would stand up to all that drilling again!!

And Bob, you are more than welcome to visit us down here and we will fit
some flying in. ( hope for good weather of course)

Thanks for the clarification. I am not being sensitive about the gear so to
speak. I do have concerns about the gear in rough operations. I don't
know how it will stand up. I am not doing our friend Alister is doing i.e.
flying in his conditions. I was too late to add some of the upgrades to the
gear but I did add some reinforcement to the floor. I do agree with the
concept that the braking loads can be very high - probably much worse than
landing loads. I tend to go easy on the brakes after a saw a Rebel nose
over in front of me one day. Now there are probably 2 good reasons not to
overdo the braking on roll out.

I have been getting a lot of flying in recently. For some reason I have
noticed a considerably improvement in the way the Rebel flies in slightly
cooler weather. The climb is clearly improved which is normal, but for
some reason, I am now getting considerably higher top rpm. It is now not
than unusual to get 120 kias, (confirmed by GPS), on occasion. Wish I could
cruise at this all the time. The fuel burn is probably ridiculous at this
speed but it is a bit of a rush. After the other gentleman indicated is
high rate of cruise on an 0240, I have my work cut out for me. Maybe a
constant speed prop would be good. BTW, do you know the diameter & pitch of
the prop. on your new machine? We should compare performance notes to help
tune up each other!

Hi Brian !

The cooler air always helps ! :-) The denser air gives more
power, so we win 2 ways - more lift AND more power ! It is always
surprising just how much better things get with just a small drop in
temperature !!

120KT !! VERY impressive - I know just how addictive more
speed can be - I'm having a hard time adjusting to normal life after
seeing 150 KT (!!) cruise., in spots, with the Super Rebel (and a good
tailwind :-) ) !!!!

The new prop is 74 x 56, and I could turn 2,700 in climb, but
now only get about 2,500.... GOT to get that right mag off and back
to the shop !! Just haven't had ANY time to work on it - OR fly ...
Finally got out to wash & wax FINR today - looks MUCH better ! Now
I've just GOT to SELL it NOW !!!
(need paint and amphibs for the new one ... ;-) )

We really should swap rides one day - it would be very
interesting - I think we're very close in performance .... what
we really need is a separate set of calibrated instruments !
I guess we could compare GPS for cruise - I know I'm a LOT slower,
because I don't even have fairings on the gear legs yet !! That alone
costs about 10 mph ... I'm only cruising about 118 mph at 2,450 rpm.

Too bad the runways at Brampton are so narrow - we could take
off side-by-side ....

Anyway, I know we outperform ALMOST everything on the airport !!
(Chris can outclimb us - but then, that's a 300 HP. Pitts Special !!) :-)

Hey Bob,
One way to really improve that Lyconosaursus is to update the Mag system!!!
Why not toss that old piece of iron and put in an electronic system. Either
The Klause Saiver or the Jeff Rose system. I think tht they both have a
system that now just goes into the Mag hole instead of having to put the
pickup coils under the flywheel. Either way I do believe that the cost
difference will be made up in fuel savings and the cost of Aviation plugs if
you go to the better automotive type sparkplugs. Fyi, neither system has had
an inflight failure due to the system malfunctioning. Those that have failed
are due to improper wireing. Also you can ask Bill Turner Senior how he feels
about the system they are running. IMHO. Curt N97MR

I <WILL> do that - one day..... The mags are still under warranty
(I hope), so I'll just get it fixed for now, but I'm completely
convinced that the LightSpeed or LASAR systems would be an improvement.
I <might> chicken out a bit, and just switch ONE over - then I could have
the best of both worlds. I'd really like the extra power & economy
that the extra advance would give !

SO many things to do - so little time !! First project is to
get a set of Dave Fife's wing tips on, with landing lights in them.
Next is gear leg fairings, then a complete paint job, then Amphibs ....

Might be a while before I get to the electronic ignition ! ;-)

Looking forward to seeing you guys at the Rebel Builders
Meeting on Nov. 12th - hope the weather's good !!!
