Fuel Fittings

Post by Bob Patterson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 11:34 pm

Hi Warren !

I suggest that folks buy the fuel shutoff valves for the
Renegade, or something equally cheap & simple, and install them
at the <bottom> of the sight tubes. This gives you a simple shutoff
if you need to replace the guage tubing, without draining the tank,
OR - if you see trees coming !!! ;-)

protection against a leak if the wings are folded back.

Fuel Fittings

Post by Drew and Jan » Fri Feb 17, 2012 11:34 pm

Bob I think you're suggesting something that could be potentialy dangerous.
If someone were to select their fuel guages off by mistake they could fly
their tanks empty while still showing lots of fuel on the guages.
Personally I think getting out of bed in the morning is a bigger risk than
a post crash fire but if it's a concern maybe electric guages would the way
to go.
Drew Dalgleish

P.S. Warren I didn't know that there was bush in the middle east.

Bob Patterson

Fuel Fittings

Post by Bob Patterson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 11:34 pm

Drew,

I agree there is a small element of danger, but, in my case,
the valve is ONLY there so I can change the tubing when (not IF) I
get a bad batch of gas, and it starts to discolour. This happens about
once a year, on average ! This is not a valve you would normally
be fooling with. Of course, someone could also select left tank,
and check the right guage until they ran dry, too !! It's hard
to make airplanes foolproof ! ;-)

Personally, I'm not worried about the guage leaking in a crash
- it would have to be a REALLY bad one to get to that point, and the
tank itself would more likely be crushed !! VERY unlikely in the
Rebel, as you can slow the thing down to a walk, at which point,
even going into the trees, <I'M> going to walk away !!

Personally, I would NEVER choose an electric fuel guage over
a simple sight guage - <MY> experience tells me they're less reliable,
and more complex and expensive !! Some folks are just paranoid about
fuel (and they have their own reasons ! )....

Fuel Fittings

Post by rebelair » Fri Feb 17, 2012 11:34 pm

HI Drew

Electric gauges may prevent a fire in the cabin, but you could argue the
other way that an incorrect electric fuel gauge reading could cause you to
run out of petrol en route which would lead to a crash any way. Kind of a
catch 22 so to speak.

Regards

Legeorgen

Fuel Fittings

Post by Legeorgen » Fri Feb 17, 2012 11:34 pm

Mike,

If you add a fuel flow restricter in the bottom of the sight tube, i.e., a
plug with a tiny hole to allow fuel to equalize but not slosh in the tube,
then your sight gage would work reliable in the air, as well on the ground.

AGT

Fuel Fittings

Post by AGT » Fri Feb 17, 2012 11:39 pm

I was wondering if anyone else was contemplating the "keep it simple"
approach. I like the simplicity and ultimate reliability of sight tubes,
but was also concerned about fuel leakage into the cockpit in the event of a
forced landing. Add a fuel shutoff valve. Of course! However...

I owned a Renegade while I was in Australia a few years ago. I didn't build
it. I bought it in flying condition. It had a sight tube of sorts. The
fuel from each wing tank simply ran through tubes to a tee right on top of
the wing. From there, a single tube ran on top of the wing to the trailing
edge then found its way along various struts through the fuselage and
eventually to the engine compartment. The single tube on top of the wing
was simply marked with a black pen for Full, 3/4, 1/2, 1/4 and empty. On
the groung you had to lift the tail to level the fuselage to get a rough
reading. In flight, the sight tube was useless. The fuel level, even in
relatively smooth air, moved up and down in the tube and was impossible to
read. I always visually checked fuel before flight, then went on fuel flow
to figure when I'd be on fumes. How do they work in a Super Rebel? Or
Rebel, or Elite? Is there a relatively stable level in the sight tube in
flight?

Mike

Craig Walls

Fuel Fittings

Post by Craig Walls » Sun Feb 19, 2012 7:51 pm

Does anyone have a spare fuel fitting they'd like to part with? I believe
W-159 is the number but I'd take a 160 as well. The part's only (only?)
$26 from MAM but they'll only fedex or ups it here and the cheapest is $70
shipping. I figure it weighs about an ounce and could be mailed in a soft
envelope. Thanks in advance. Craig
