[rebel-builders] VG's on Rebel stabilizer and pneumatic tailwheel

Post by Walter Klatt » Sun Feb 19, 2012 7:51 pm

Ken, I tried the VGs on the stabs on another airplane (not a Rebel), but
they didn't do anything for it either. They were mounted just ahead of the
hinge point. Maybe they should have been mounted further forward?

On my Rebel, I just have them on the wings, and they definitely work well
there, and even better now on the water with the 360. However, I have no
problems with elevator authority on the amphibs (unlike before on wheels),
as the higher landing speeds keep them effective all the way to touchdown.
If I went any slower, my nose would be too high, and risk hitting the back
of the floats on the runway. On take-off, I can lift the nose wheels at
about 30 mph, so that's no problem either.

I find that I generally have enough authority to get to 3 point for
landing. Sometimes the flare is pretty quick though if the throttle is
closed and it might be nice to be able to force the tail down faster
when needed for short fields or when the wind drops off. Think I've got
around 28 to 30 degrees up elevator.

A little throttle solves all the problems too but it does eat up more
runway.

I have considered VG's on the tail end but as the plane stands now with
VG's only on the wing(and working very well), one always runs out of
elevator authority well before the wing wants to stall or even tend to
drop on one side. I like that characteristic, especially on a float
plane but wonder if there is some other view that counters that thought.

I stuck 15 Harrison VG's on the underside of each stab. Admittedly that
is not as many as recommended but I can't say that I notice any
improvement. I'm not seeing any increased authority at or near max up
elevator deflection for 3 point landings.

Also replaced the solid MAM tailwheel with a 2"x6" pneumatic wheel from
Princess Auto. I replaced the junk bearings with 6202-8 2RS permanently
lubed and sealed bearings which increased the expenditure by $10. Seems
to work just fine. It is a lighter wheel and it gives a smoother and
quieter taxi. At 30 psi, hopefully it will be a bit better on soft
surfaces but it really isn't any wider than the original. Downside is
that I guess I'll have to carry another spare inner tube...
Oh what the heck, at $4. for a complete wheel, tire, and tube, maybe I'll
carry a complete spare wheel until I see how it holds up.
