[rebel-builders] OSH2008

Post by Tim Hickey » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:47 pm

Okay, I will put this year at OSH down as a learning experience. After
assembling the Osh 2008 Murphy builders attendance list, we had exactly one
guy, well, two might be closer to the truth, follow the very detailed and
quite clear directions.

(by the way, this is being written with a tone of humor and good will buried
in it. So don't nobody get upset.)

On Monday, at the appointed time and place, there were exactly three people
who assembled. I, my brother, and Joe Ronco. My brother don't count in this
situation, as I had my eye on him all day.
We waited until 5:15, and figured that either everyone was lost, or that no
one gave a hoot about meeting up.
We proceeded to the beer tent where we found Bob and his wife. A bit later
Bob Cressman stumbled in, and that, as they say, was that.
Si Smith, with Matt and James, were at the field with their beautiful Rebel.
While spending some time talking with Matt, I think I heard over my shoulder
Dave Tuck introduce himself to someone. But I was deep in conversation with
Matt, so I did not turn around to meet him. A few minutes later, he was
gone, so I missed him. Sorry, Dave.
I think it was Tuesday that I did get a call from Ron Shannon, and we did
get to eyeball each other over lunch. His time was limited, (something silly
about a wedding) so we did not get to swap lies.
On Tuesday evening we did get a small group together at Friar Tucks for
dinner. There we had Charlie and Mary Eubanks, Bob and Anna, Bob Cressman,
Joe Ronco, and myself. By then my brother had to head home.
After dinner we walked down to where Bob Cressman had parked his Rebel.
Bob's machine is on amphibious floats, and looks just great. We spent about
an hour looking at it.

After that, it seems like we all just kind of went our separate ways.
Next year, I will try to put together a better plan so that some of us can
link up.

Footnote 1. Ron Sharron was right, This effort was like herding cats.

Footnote 2. Always lock your car, and don't leave anything in it. On Monday
night at the Super 8 in Fond Du Lac, my car was entered and my backpack
stolen. The backpack was a freebee from the lumber yard, but the camera in
it was not. My brother's car was also entered, but nothing was taken. We
both thought that we had locked our doors, and Matt Smith says that he has
heard that some cell phones can be programmed to open some makes of cars.
But not to worry, I have insurance. $500 deductible. The camera was worth
300.

All in all it was good to be able to meet and discuss stuff with Matt, Bob P
and Bob C, and good to see Joe and Ron again. Sorry I missed you other guys
that were there.

Hi Tim
Went to the Montana booth. He said one of the Honda pavillions at 500 which there are 6 plus pavillions and the honda show booth. He wanted me to come back to him with better details if I found any as he thought it was Tuesday nite not Monday. Got to the Honda jet area at 530 and no one around. Are you talking about the beer tent that is off grounds? I met Si and the two others and Jim Cole and that was it for me.

I have to admit that the size of Oshkosh and the distance between camping
and airplane camping made it a real challenge to meet people. I did enjoy
the food at Friar Tucks (Bob's recommendation) and it was a nice change.
Next time I will understand the transportation system better.
I did sit under the wing from 3 - 5 one afternoon resting my feet, sipping
on a cold beer or two and watching the air show - it really doesn't get any
better!

Cheers
Jim

Hi Steve, and Jim.

Sorry we didn't link up, but I hope everyone had a good time.

For the record, here is what I wrote....
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So lets meet in the back of Pavilion 004 at 5:00 PM. From there we can head
for the Beer Tent, if it can be found, or take a vote and do what seems like
a good idea at the time.

So that is the plan

Monday, 5:00 PM. Pavilion 004 in the Honda Forms Plaza, in the back of the
building.
From there we can plan additional meetings at locations that seem best.
Those folks who are coming into the show later can call me for any updates
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next year we need to pick a spot that is clearly defined and centrally
located.

Recommendations accepted.

The beer tent is the one that is under the yellow balloon. And yes, I
believe it is technically off the EAA grounds, but right on the road. I was
reluctant to id it as a meeting place because I do know that it has moved
some over the years, and I do recall hearing some conversation by others
indicating that the EAA would just as soon that the beer tent go away. With
the power of the EAA, I would not be surprised if they loaded the city
council to the point where the people that own the tent were denied a liquor
permit.
On a side note, I heard a public address announcement (recorded) several
times where the announcer pointed out that.."alcoholic beverages are not
permitted in THE PUBLIC AREAS of the EAA grounds." (Caps mine).
Translation? Drinks are in the press office and other "special" areas where
the corporate big shots from the large companies hang out.

And another thing...
Anybody hear what the deal was with Patty Wagstaff? Something about being in
an area at night where she was not supposed to be??
I'll bet that she was not at the beer tent....

As one of the cats being herded, I claim myself innocent with a bullet proof
alibi.!

I only arrived on Tuesday!

But it was nice to (by luck) run into Mike B and Jim while shopping at
Aircraft Spruce and then Tom, Bob, Anna and Joe from Colorado for lunch on Friday.

I guess that's why they call us "Rebels"!

Yo, Rebellious Ones,

Sorry I didn't get to meet up with more of you (Jim, Steve, Bob, et al.) at
OSH. Spent part of Wednesday wandering around by myself, and had a super
time on Thursday wandering around with my daughter -- her first visit there.
She was pretty stoked about the prospect of flying the Rebel in to stay at
the homebuilt camping sometime. On the down side, the three hours of commute
time each day cut into early and late options for activities.

Thanks to Tim for carrying the flag. (You mean, those _weren't_ all lies
that I heard?) With a little luck, maybe next year I'll be able to fly in.

Ron

Bob Patterson

[rebel-builders] OSH2008

Post by Bob Patterson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:47 pm

Thanks for the effort, Tim !

As I mentioned, you had more success than I've ever had
at getting Rebel Builders to meet up at OSH !!

For next year, I'd try Tuesday afternoon, about 4 PM, at
the Beer Tent - just because you can see that yellow balloon
from almost everywhere .... and they have BEER !! :-)
(or just head for Friars ...) ;-)

Sorry we missed you on your last day - we were a few minutes
late getting to Friar's -- waited 15 minutes, and nobody showed -
checked for Bob C's Rebel -- it was gone ... so we tried the
Mexican restaurant across the street & down a bit. It was
excellent !! Good food, really fast service, and not too crowded,
at 4:30 -- by 5:30, there was a long lineup outside !!!

It was great to catch up with everybody - it's difficult, because
there's always soooo much to see & do at OSH ... and we had
a GREAT time this year !! Best weather I can remember !

We'll see everybody at Sun 'n Fun next spring - the Builders
Get-together there is often much better --- we usually meet at the
Campground Corn Roast at 4 PM ... Have had some good crowds !!
Providing beer, wine, and munchies seems to help .... ;-) :-)
