McKenzie STOL kit

Post by Bob Patterson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:22 pm

Hi Scott !

I should let Angus answer - I know he has a printed info
package.... Not sure if he's getting mail from this list, though.

For over a year, Angus has been supplying a STOL kit that
adds a cuff to the leading edge, supported by small rib sections,
and wing fences. The fellows who are flying them say they just
do wonders for slow flight performance - apparently the Rebel just
doesn't stall anymore !!

One builder remarked that he had to use his GPS for approach
into 900 ft. (!) lakes (!), because his airspeed didn't read down to
38 mph !!!

The kit is designed to install easily, in about 8 hours, and
costs about (don't quote me - I'm 'remembering' badly ..) $2,700.

When combined with the Dave Fife Hoerner wing tips, you've
got serious competition for a Helio !!

McKenzie STOL kit

Post by Brian H. Cross » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:22 pm

Hi Bob

Sounds great to me. Still would like to know for sure what the STOL kit
does for top end performance e.g. I hope that it does not take anything off
of the top end.

Hi Brian !

The word back from the fellows who have them is that, if
anything, they might have gained maybe 1 mph !! Angus should be
at the meeting tomorrow - good time to ask him !!! ;-)

McKenzie STOL kit

Post by Brian H. Cross » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:22 pm

Hi Bob

Thanks for the info. I am not trying to gain speed, ( though I would never
say no to that), I just don't want to see for example a loss in top end of 5
mph or so.

Look forward to talking about this.

Cheers

Brian #328R

Lonnie Benson

Mckenzie Stol kit

Post by Lonnie Benson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:49 pm

Bruce,

I just went through all of my Rebel pictures and found two pictures of the
original installation on McKenzie's Rebel. Neither picture would be of any
help. They show the fence but not the droop of the leading edge. Sorry.

McKenzie STOL kit

To all those interested,
About 2 years ago Angus sent me some photos that show the dimpled
rivet locations. I tried to forward his message to the list, but the
list won't accept attachments. Let me know your e-mail address and I
will forward it to you off list.

Hi Roger,

Could you please send the photos and info to me. Have you installed the
McKenzie STOL kit on your aircraft, and if so, did you notice much of a
performance difference? How much weight does it add? Have you also added
VGs?

Regards
