Matco wheels and brakes

Post by Legeorgen » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:27 pm

Wayne, Bob, anyone,

My Rebel kit has the old Matco wheels (8x6.5) with 3/4" axles and Matco
brakes. Is there a need to purchase the newer MAM 1" axles and wheels and MAM
brakes? The plane will most likely get an O 320 install. Thanks for the tip
on an engine source from ATC of Ontario, Bob.

Matco wheels and brakes

Bruce, my personal rebel still has the gold matco 6" wheels on it! Once you
learn not to tighten the axle nut other than by hand, the plain roller
bearings last about 2 1/2 years. If your kit has the silver coloured ones
they are even better as they have tapered roller bearings. Both Matco models
brakes rattle and I always rode the brakes so people didn't hear my plane
rattling. I then got smart and put a dab of silicon on each pad assembly
guide shaft so they don't rattle, but they can still self adjust. The gold
ones are only rated at 660 pounds per wheel, but mine have a "reinforcing"
plate on each side of the wheel assembly to beef them up a bit (one side
1/4", other 3/16"). I'm pretty hard on the plane, pasture landings, wheel
penetration skis in all kinds of snow conditions and lately due to the
extremely low water levels on Georgian Bay, beach landings, The wheels are
holding up just fine after 5 1/2 years of flying. Contrary to most stories
I've heard, my Matcos hold during mag checks at 1800 rpm and as a matter of
fact I can hold the brakes and at full power lift the tail before brake
release and "launch".

Bruce the wheel/axle swap is a simple, after the fact, change if you are not
happy with what you have. Remove two bolts, place the new assembly and drill
two new holes and rebolt. Not quite so easy for me though as I would have to
redesign and remanufacture my penetration wheel ski mounts if I switched to
the MAM wheels. So maybe I'm just happy with the wheels on the side of being
lazy!

As for John Donaldson's work at ATC, I was quite happy with a 230 H.P.
O-470-L that was done at Canadian Aero (where John was shop foreman until
his leaving caused the closure of the engine shop) for my C182. Monday I am
picking up a Zero'd 150 H.P. O-320 from John that is being run up on the
dyno this weekend! Once I get it on the amphib and run it up, I should have
a pretty good idea as to the quality of ATC's work (now that John has been
running his own "show" for a few years).

Regards,

Matco wheels and brakes

Post by Legeorgen » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:27 pm

Thanks for the input Wayne. I'll contact John at ATC this week.

I have silver Matcos on the Kitfox and the rattling has always bothered me.
I tried your silicone trick and it seemed to work on one wheel. I must not
have done a good job so I'll do it again this February at the planes next
annual.

If the Matcos have held up well I might just stay with them, as they may save
a little weight and not cost me anything. I will be in Seattle Friday and
plan to take a trip to MAM in Chillawack. I'll give their wheels and brakes a
better look then.

Matco wheels and brakes

Post by Bob Patterson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:27 pm

Hi Bruce !

There are 2 different kinds of Matco wheels & brakes - if yours
are the old, GOLD coloured ones .... YES !!! DEFINITELY replace them
with the newer Murphy wheels.

If you have the SILVER Matcos, they are OK - I flew those often,
and, although not as strong as the Murphy brakes, they were OK. Perhaps
this is a safety "advantage" - you're not as likely to stand it on
its nose !! ;-)
