[rebel-builders] Masking Tape Glue

Post by steve whitenect » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:10 pm

Anyone got a good remedy for removing masking tape off of gelcoat after 10 years? Have tried just about everything and nothing will soften it up.

I've used varsol successfully on old duct tape residue but not sure
about masking tape residue.

Try spraying it with wd-40, let it sit for 20 minutes then wipe it off.

Hi Steve: If lacquer thinner will not work (which I am sure it would) then
the gel type paint stripper ( Lepages Poly Super Strippa) definitely will.
Just clean it off with varsol or equivalent afterwards. Bob J

One thing that might help is GooGone sold for removing stickers and tape
at hardware stores etc. Kind of oily and slow to evaporate so that it
soaks in.

Another might be lighter fluid. At Wayne's suggestion, that was the only
thing that helped much for removing the protective coating from my
windshield. As always try solvents first where you can't see the result
just in case...

tape glue.

I have used a heat gun and it works very well it will soften
the glue and it can be scraped off, then cleaned with a solvent
However I would use caution not to get the plastic to hot

Thanks to those that responded about the masking tape. The problem is that there is no glue left- just the tape welded to the gelcoat! Will be trying some of the suggestions....................

I would try sandpaper to slightly roughen (open) the top surface of the
masking tape, then put Goof-off on that and let it soak. It should come
off easily with a plastic scraper (or even a paper towel) after soaking
awhile -- maybe 30 minutes but up to an hour. I live and die by that stuff
for the plastic coatings that have hardened onto aluminum.

I meant to say up to 12 hours soaking with the Goof-off.
