Publishing Modifications vs Service Bulletins

Post by Ted Waltman » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:16 pm

Hello Bob,

I suspect we're of the same opinion. I too agree that Murphy Aircraft has
no responsibility to publish every modification individuals choose to make
to their planes.

However, I feel very strongly that Murphy has an obligation to publish
safety related updates that they or builders bring to light (e.g. service
bulletins). Personally, I'm not looking to Murphy for free parts or free
labor--I just want to know when there is a change to a part or assembly
method that will lead to a safer plane (and yes, it is entirely up to me as
the builder to decide whether to incorporate such changes).

Furthermore, I feel Murphy should, as simply a good business practice,
publish changes to the manual as they at the factory update their kit
designs with improvements. Again, the builder can decide whether to
incorporate any such changes.

Again, I think we're on the same page. I suspect most of us on the list
feel similarly. We're building experimental planes which, by definition,
can indeed all have slightly different features.

Hi Ted,

Thus far, I'm very happy with my experience with Murphy aircraft. As an
experimental home built type aircraft, builders have and will continue to
inject personal practices and modifications. I suspect there are no two
flying Murphy aircraft that are identical ... as one would (should) find in
the production aircraft community ... which is as things should be. I think
the many mods that have come along over the years are great. And agree they
should be made public so that builders can learn about them, and then choose
to implement or not to implement. I do NOT however think its Murphy
aircraft's position or responbsibility to publish or post every modification
that's come along since first aircraft delivery. I DO however believe that
Murphy should publish modifications that impact the airworthiness of the
aircraft within its published flight parameters ... as service type
bulletins (optional implementation), and I think they've done an excellent
job of doing that. The solution to me is there should be a common website
(such as this one) where "Builder Modifications" are clearly written and
published. And thanks to contributing builders like yourself, I think Mikes
website here does an excellent job of making this supplemental type
information available to the overriding Murphy building community. Just my
two cents on a Tuesday morning ....

Cheers, Bob 612e

Jack,

Answer to your 1st question: The change came from the Murphy Tech Support
staff.

Long answer to your 2nd question: The website indicates that "All updates
will include the entire chapter..." which is a fact that I brought up to
Joel Landry (Sales Manager who directed the website redesign effort; Joel is
no longer with Murphy Aircraft). Joel indicated that they were not going to
post new chapters because they sell the manual.

When I redid the website for Murphy, I pointed out many--many-- missing
manual updates and service bulletins across all the aircraft--not just the
Moose. Joel indicated he would find the missing documents and get them to
me so I could post them on the website--that never happened.

I have no idea if or when the new Chapter 9-4 will get posted to the website
or sent to builders.

Ted,

Where does this new change come from? When I go to the Murphy web site there
is no
manual revision later than Jun 26,2006???

I just uploaded a corrected image from a March 2007 version of chapter 9-4
that shows the correct location of the Flap-11 hole in the rear spar
attach
doubler. The updated image is located in area 107 S/M Fuselage (file
name:
<https://mail.dcsol.com/code/html-fdnld? ... no=1042432>
Flap11_UpdatedLocation_w.jpg ). It turns out that the location in
previous
versions of Chapter 9-4 is incorrect and will lead to downstream fit
problems with the headliner.

Email me at ted@i1ci.com if you want a PDF version.
