[rebel-builders] Moose: Updated Flap-11 hole location

Post by lawsondj » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:16 pm

Ted,

Where does this new change come from? When I go to the Murphy web site there is no
manual revision later than Jun 26,2006???

Jack,SR193
-------------- Original message ----------------------
From: "Ted Waltman" <tedwaltman@i1ci.com>
I just uploaded a corrected image from a March 2007 version of chapter 9-4
that shows the correct location of the Flap-11 hole in the rear spar attach
doubler. The updated image is located in area 107 S/M Fuselage (file name:
<https://mail.dcsol.com/code/html-fdnld? ... no=1042432>
Flap11_UpdatedLocation_w.jpg ). It turns out that the location in previous
versions of Chapter 9-4 is incorrect and will lead to downstream fit
problems with the headliner.

Email me at ted@i1ci.com if you want a PDF version.

[rebel-builders] Moose: Updated Flap-11 hole location

Post by Ted Waltman » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:16 pm

Jack,

Answer to your 1st question: The change came from the Murphy Tech Support
staff.

Long answer to your 2nd question: The website indicates that "All updates
will include the entire chapter..." which is a fact that I brought up to
Joel Landry (Sales Manager who directed the website redesign effort; Joel is
no longer with Murphy Aircraft). Joel indicated that they were not going to
post new chapters because they sell the manual.

When I redid the website for Murphy, I pointed out many--many-- missing
manual updates and service bulletins across all the aircraft--not just the
Moose. Joel indicated he would find the missing documents and get them to
me so I could post them on the website--that never happened.

I have no idea if or when the new Chapter 9-4 will get posted to the website
or sent to builders.

[rebel-builders] Moose: Updated Flap-11 hole location

Post by Robert Andrews » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:16 pm

Hi Ted,

Thus far, I'm very happy with my experience with Murphy aircraft. As an
experimental home built type aircraft, builders have and will continue to
inject personal practices and modifications. I suspect there are no two
flying Murphy aircraft that are identical ... as one would (should) find in
the production aircraft community ... which is as things should be. I think
the many mods that have come along over the years are great. And agree they
should be made public so that builders can learn about them, and then choose
to implement or not to implement. I do NOT however think its Murphy
aircraft's position or responbsibility to publish or post every modification
that's come along since first aircraft delivery. I DO however believe that
Murphy should publish modifications that impact the airworthiness of the
aircraft within its published flight parameters ... as service type
bulletins (optional implementation), and I think they've done an excellent
job of doing that. The solution to me is there should be a common website
(such as this one) where "Builder Modifications" are clearly written and
published. And thanks to contributing builders like yourself, I think Mikes
website here does an excellent job of making this supplemental type
information available to the overriding Murphy building community. Just my
two cents on a Tuesday morning ....

Cheers, Bob 612e

Ted,

My apologies if I understood the content of this thread. I am of the

It seems to me that this scenario differs greatly from the one where
individual builders perform elective modifications.

If you've noticed other errors in the docs that could/would save others

about them. :-)

Again - apologies if I mis-read.

Thanks,

[rebel-builders] Moose: Updated Flap-11 hole location

Post by Mike Davis » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:16 pm

This looks like a good opportunity to remind everyone of the Service
Bulletins & Modifications web site I setup...

http://www.dcsol.com/sbmod/

Set this up a while back when it was suggested that this information be made
available in one location, instead of being buried in over 30,000 list
messages.

[rebel-builders] Moose: Updated Flap-11 hole location

Post by Ted Waltman » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:16 pm

Hello Fred,

Yes, per the folks at Murphy Technical Support, the last two versions of the
manual did have a hole location in an incorrect location (e.g. 4" vs 3" for
the "FLAP-11" hole in Chapter 9.4). I'm not sure (yet) that you'd have
"...major troubles..." but at the least, again per Murphy Tech Support, you
would not be able to install the Murphy headliner without further
modification.

I have not yet compared the new Chapter 9-4, which I now have, with the
previous versions to see if there are other changes.

You're right Fred, this is NOT a case of one builder or another performing
an "...elective modification." I suspect that Bob might have missed this
point in his post below.

[rebel-builders] Moose: Updated Flap-11 hole location

Post by Fred Messinger (fredm) » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:16 pm

<rant>

This is bogus. I was told when I bought this hunk of metal that the manual
and updates were free to those that bought. Including the electronic form.

It's just plain wrong that I now have to buy the directions! Imaging
having to buy the assembly directions to your bandsaw.

The updates with errors in them are free on the website. And I have to pay
for corrected versions?

I just uploaded a corrected image from a March 2007 version of chapter
9-4
that shows the correct location of the Flap-11 hole in the rear spar
attach
doubler. The updated image is located in area 107 S/M Fuselage (file
name:
<https://mail.dcsol.com/code/html-fdnld? ... no=1042432>
Flap11_UpdatedLocation_w.jpg ). It turns out that the location in
previous
versions of Chapter 9-4 is incorrect and will lead to downstream fit
problems with the headliner.

Email me at ted@i1ci.com if you want a PDF version.

[rebel-builders] Moose: Updated Flap-11 hole location

Post by Ken » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:16 pm

Mike there is nothing there under Rebel S/B's.
I have 37 of them (4 MB) of which most or all must have come from the CD
manual. I think my dial up account can handle the upload this month if
you want me to attempt it. Most are more than 10 years old. Or maybe
someone with a high speed connection has these.

Set this up a while back when it was suggested that this information be made
available in one location, instead of being buried in over 30,000 list
messages.

[rebel-builders] Moose: Updated Flap-11 hole location

Post by Mike Davis » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:16 pm

As I'm not building a Rebel, I never bothered to go out and get them
myself... I just made the site available so that the information could be
collected in one place. I have no intention of maintaining it's currency,
or insuring it's accuracy. I did load a number of the Moose updates...
obviously didn't get them all though.

I was obviously hoping that as folks got an update themselves, they would
post it to this site so we would end up with a good library to fall back on.
