Bob
I was made aware that some inspectors will check the inner intergity of the
wings with a borescope. The floor wouldn't be that much to open up. Really,
what are they looking for other than rivet alignment with the inner braces
and any obvious damage or re-work and any plumbing/wiring underneath.

Sure ! The same reason Experimentals sell much cheaper
in the US than in Canada ..... multiple thorough Government
inspections.

To be registered as an Amateur-Built in Canada, all sub-assemblies
must be inspected by Government Representatives BEFORE CLOSING,
and this usually involves 3 inspections - sometimes more ...

Since that Rebel was completed, closed up, and on the gear,
it cannot be inspected, and cannot be registered ! At least one
person has already tried this - he has a very expensive lawn ornament !!

The MDRA is the usual inspection agency, but for 'flying' imports, or
if they choose to, the inspection is done by Transport Canada.

Hi Steve !

Maybe in your area, Maybe for a Canadian homebuilt, Maybe by MDRA,
but NOT here in Ontario, by either MDRA OR Transport - there was a guy
near us who tried that --- absolutely NO to borescope - they wanted it
OPEN !! They also wanted ALL of the parts OPEN - elevator, stab,
rudder, ailerons, etc. .... and they are entitled to ask this .....
after all, even then, it's a bit of a stretch from the rules ....

I heard he trucked the Rebel back to the US and sold it cheap !

As much as one can tell, that project looks too good. Everything (even the
workshop pics) looks clean, organized. I couldn't spend that kind of money
sight unseen, but it looks to me like someone could be getting a Rebel at
better than 50%. High risk can mean high reward (or it can mean big trouble).

Bob, I don't get the "McCullogh 2 stroke drone engine" note. What am I
missing there?

As for inspection, in theory he'd even have some serious troubles proving
51% without the seller's involvement. I guess its been done, but probably
with some heaving fudging of who really did what. Then again, could he
open up the wings and aim for full Canadian inspections?

[rebel-builders] Nice looking Rebel on eBay

Post by Bob Patterson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:16 pm

Hi Ben !

There was a list on eBay of his prior purchases - the Rebel buyer has
also bought <2> McCulloch 2-stroke drone engines recently ! Likely
the same place Eddie found that he rode a Honda Gold Wing ...

The 51% is so much of an issue here - it is legal to hire someone
to build your complete kit, as long as you supervise the construction !
But in this case, yes, he'd need a LOT of support from the original
builder.

And you are correct - he <could> open up the wings, the fuel tanks,
the fuselage (remember the double floor ..), the elevators, stab,
rudder, and ailerons ..... and get them inspected ..... a LOT of work,
and he'd end up with a lot of oversized holes .... Really not worth
the effort !!

AFAIK, nobody has successfully done that ! A few have tried ....
