JABIRU and HCI.

Post by C&P Kucera » Fri Feb 17, 2012 5:57 pm

Hi Jim,

I am also keeping an eye on the 3300Jabiru. It's simple and light. The 6 is
supposed to be really smooth. There have been some teething problems but I
think overall these will be good engines. Some builders reported cooling
problems but they were largely associated with undersized outlets in the
cowl and baffle design. Somewhere I read that the break-in is long and power
improves as the hours pile up.
Here is a uk site that lists some owners experiences.

There is a nice 7 cyl radial coming up from HCI. Looks great. Very simple.
Short crank, Prop at one end, supercharger on the other. Its 27 " dia over
the cyl heads. The heads are small. it is side valve train. It's
supercharged at 123 hp, weighs around 150 lbs . They have a 5 cyl version
flying, very sucessfully. The 7 cyl is still in developement and the guys
there said not to bother calling untill next year. They are a serious bunch
with lots of experience on radials. Unlike the 5 cyl the 7 will not be
available in kit form, only assembled and tested.
The Rebel would look cool with it, like a mini Beaver. I'm keeping an eye on
it too.Here is their site:

Hi all
I am planing on use a 6 cylinder Jabiru engine in my rebel mostly due to
cost
and weight. I am looking for any fed back, good or bad, on this from the
group.
How slow will it cruise using about 100 HP in cruise?
If I keep it light can I still operate on skis?
Will the shorter take off distance ( lower weight ) make up for the
Initial
climb rate?
Thanks Jim LePard ,, rebel 254
Here is a link to the jabiru web page for more engine info.
