ELT & Starter

Hi gang,

1. Any recommendation for an ELT? It seems to me that with the change to
243 MHz, it would make sense to buy an inexpensive 121.5 MHz unit now, in
the hope that the new 243 units will come down in price. What is the
input from the Canadian group?

2. Head up. I just gave my starter the smoke test, and it failed. The
solenoid produced a pretty white smoke and heated up very quickly. The
overhaul documentation indicates that it is a Sky-tec 122-12PM. Having
contacted Sky-tec we have managed to verify that it is not one of theirs.
Lovely. According to Sky-tec, "There are a number of "creative types" in
this small industry who have attempted to make a small cottage industry
copying our starter designs." Any similar experiences out there?
Apparently I can buy a automotive solenoid that will bolt on just fine.

I'm certainly no expert on ELT's but I'll throw in what I do know. 121.5 and
243 are basically the same type of ELT. 243 is the double harmonic as well as
the UHF (military) frequency. The new frequency and type of ELT is the 406
Mhz. Although not required now, it will be in the next few years. But a better
reason to upgrade now is the fact that the 406 signal can be narrowed down
to a much smaller search area than the 121.5/243, making it a rescue instead
of a search and rescue. I have also been told that searchers will not go out,
when a 121.5/243 signal is activated, without confirmation. Searchers will
dispatch immediately with a 406 signal apparently do to significantly less false
activations. ACR makes a dual type 121.5/406 ELT using one antenna for less
than a thousand dollars US, which is a lot, but maybe not so much if you
need a lift from the backwoods. That's the quick and dirty of it.
