Hi Rick Sorry I'm not going to share my prince prop. I wanted to mention
though that it has a very thin profile and I don't think that making it out
of wood without the carbon fibre is a very good idea.

G'day Everyone !

I am REALLY interested in making a "Warnke styled propeller" OR
a "Prince P-Tip styled propeller" for our Rebel ...
So ..........

1) Does anyone have EITHER a Warnke OR a Prince propeller that they
don't want - for WHATEVER reason - that they are wlling to sell OR
to "lend me" to try out ??? - (I'll arrange the transport
from you - to
me & back again)

2) Does anyone have a DAMAGED Warnke OR Prince propeller that I
can either BUY or BORROW - (I'll arrange the transport from you -
to me & back again)

(I'd like to "have a go" at making my own version of either ....
yes, I AM a glutton for punishment :o(

Hi Rick !

Don't think you'll have too much luck - think that nobody
is making Warnke's anymore, and the Prince is a thin &
complex shape. Because they change pitch, the numbers
for Prince are quite different from others ! Something
like a 76 x 44 (or 45, or 46) inch Prince would be close
to what you want for 150/160 hp. ....

The principle is the same as the old scimitar props
used in WW I, though - and that, you might be able
to make yourself. The Prince is kind of a bat-wing
shape that approximates a scimitar, but easier to
make - and you could skip the winglets....

Maybe if you did a standard prop layout, and extended
the middle of the leading edge forward about 2 - 3",
tapering back in the center & more outboard, you could get
some of the extra pull that twists the blade under load ....
A LOT of trial-and-error - but might be fun & educational !!
You could maybe use a standard prop blank & add the
extra with extra wood, & modelling clay or plaster to get
a rough shape for testing ... just as a pattern for the
cutting machine. Suspect the blade would have
to be a bit thinner for twisting ... mainly outboard.

Keep us posted !

G'day again Bob ...

I just realised (whilst re-reading this e-mail) - that you said Prince's prop' would be :

"Something like a 76 x 44 (or 45, or 46) inch Prince would be close to what you want for 150/160 hp. ...."

A 76" dia' !?!?!?!?

HELL ..... if Prince's "P-Tip" is like adding another 2" (as he states on his webpage)..... that would make it equivalent to a 78" "normal" prop' !?!
(or am I misunderstanding something here ?)

I wrote to Lonnie about 3 days ago & asked about the cost of a prop for a Rebel with approximately 170ish HP - with an expected "cruise speed" of around 105 Knots .... but as yet, he has not replied ....
(I also tried to find costs of his propellers through other places - all to no avail :o(

Do you know roughly what a Prince prop costs to suit a Rebel such as ours (170ish HP & on wheels WITH spats on all 3 wheels) ?

( there seems to be two models ..... WOOD with a composite P-Tip and also WOOD CORE with composite covering & P-Tip ... yes ?)

Thanks Bob !

You got it, Rick !

Prince props for O-320's are usually 76" - a longer
prop is always better -- if you have ground clearance,
and that's no issue on the Rebel ! His pitch numbers
seem to be aout 10 lower than Sensenich - guess that's
because of the 'auto-change' ! ;-)

i wouldn't even try to do the winglets - just getting
the blade shape should do most of the work. You
really don't want to shed a tip !

Yep .... just what I was thinking Bob !

I have access to , ... & will probably end up owning a pantograph here in Sydney - built by a couple of aeronautical engineers in their youth (it's about 35 years old ... but still works fine !)
(this is the machine that I have been "roughing out" all my propellers on .... but you still need a "master pattern" (old prop blade) to start with )

I was talking to a wizz (smart) friend today - saying that "the world needs" a propeller, not unlike an MT from Germany .....
Wood core (for the hysteresis effect) and carbon fibre for the outer THIN shape & strength ... BUT, with the scimitar shape - ( for the auto pitch effect - like Warnke & Prince) - BUT with a ground adjustable hub !

I reckon that with 3 different length blades - you could suit just about EVERY engine from 30 HP to 200 ! - and still be CHEAP ...........
AND, you could reuse that same propeller on other planes & HP ratings - just by altering the pitch a tad to suit !!!
