The .032 is probably fine Jean...but if you want to make it even better
laminate the original to it as well and add a few rows of rivets to tie them
together between the bulkheads.

..oooh and don't let the picture throw you off. I also add an extra bulkhead
in the cabin floor, positioned between the rear drag brace pair and what
would be the most forward one before the carrythru. Not totally
necessary..but I like to add it anyhow for rigidity.

I also now add a triangular gusset to the cabin floor, about 8" in size on
each side, tied into the Fus-35 angles on one edge and out onto the 2"
square carrythrooughs with the other. This helps keep the area right behind
the main gear leg attachment (FUS-2) from deforming when on floats. I'll see
if I can dig that one up for you was well.

Post by Jesse Jenks » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:35 am

Wayne,
I have two questions:
1) With the .040 fus-26s you gave me, do I need to add extra stiffeners to
it (other than the triangle gussets you mention)?
2) Has there ever been a need to add gussets around the openings where the
rear gear fittings protrude?
I plan to be rough on her, both on wheels and floats.
Thanks
Jesse

I'd be happy with 0.032. My originals were only 0.020. No point being
stronger than the rivets can hold. What is MAM shipping these days ?

Jesse...you're good to go with those .040's that I cut out for you and yes
add the lower gusset/doubler corners on the bottom cabin skin that I
described to Jean. My airplane doesn't have this...but I'm sure a couple
more summers and it will need it. It took Howard's a few seasons to start to
show signs of buckling/oil canning behind the forward gear attach
area/carrythough. Is why Bob's XWI has the gussets/doublers there.

The only damage that will happen at the rear (drag brace) gear fitting
occurs if the aircraft gets stood on it's nose (or into a big chuck hole)
and the drag brace gets driven up into the fus..buckles the double bulkheads
that hold the fittings. This is a good thing IMHO as it's very easy to fix
with minimal "dissection", compared to the consequences if you reinforced
the area just in case. Just be sure that those rear drag brace fittings get
installed with 3/16 x RV1613 rivets and NOT 1/8 x RV1410's. I've rebuilt one
Rebel that had gear failure and only because they missed that "up drill"
spec in the manual.
