Curt, that is the problem with jokes, you have to be very sure that you know
the people quite personally, so as not to insult ones Blonde wife, etc. I'm
sure Bob would add you to his mail list, if you sign a "no insult taken"
disclaimer!!!!!

PUMP OUT CUPS. Don't know if you noticed on my site, but the float
construction pictures show a good shot of the cups and hoses in two of the
forward sections. I used some good reinforced garden hose, so it doesn't
collapse from the vacuum. Works great full size, but of course leaves some
water behind that gets left in the hose (very minimal though). You should
only be pumping condensation out (that is the idea any way!), and the
greatest advantage of the cups, is the speed at which you can do a
preflight. The sound of the suction indicates no water, water or the hose
has fallen off. ALL have their own unique sound. You did buy the pump that
fits the cups from Lake and Air also?? Has rubber end to fit in cups,
available in long and short models. Save your back and buy the long one!!!!

As for the 2, -3 holes, I'm drawing a blank sitting at the computer. I have
to go out in the hanger shortly to take the battery charger off the 4
wheeler, so I will have a look at Howard's plane while I'm out there and
then drop you another line to the list!

and tap 2 #10 holes in the lower front of the nose gear retract brackets.
Well, in laying out the proper angles for square to the surface in two
directions it seemed that this would put the holes really close to the
inner
opening for the guides, possibly taking some strength from a critical area.
In trying to keep the two screws and moving them around, 2 just seemed 2
many., I think I"ll just use one, any comments?

Curt, after looking at Howard's Floats, if you are talking about the 2
machine screws per side that go in the bottom of the guide tracks, where
the
"assembly" hole/cover is, I would stick with the two holes per side. You
can
drill shallow and bottom tap, OR drill straight through (well actually
angle
through) until you come out the side, then tap. Just clean off any burrs as
the penny washers that keep the rollers in the track slide over this area,
so watch screw length also!! Any one ever told you that before??????

Sounds good Wayne,
I guess I was just a little concerned about edge distances at the
bottom of the hole. Typical builder, a little overcautious. I do appreciate
the time you take for all of us. I found a reinforced clear tubing to use on
the L and A pumpouts and a nylon cable tie bracket to secure the bottom end
to the bulkhead instead of bolts and adell clamps. I had heard of some people
putting a small piece of tubing in the bottom end and then gluing them in
place (with sealpac), but I feel this will be easier to control. Will the
long syphon tube fit through an access hole in the float top? I'm planning a
locker cover over the rearmost false bottom bulkheads, but I will still have
to work around the formers that you can't remove. I found a marine cover
that looks pretty good, if I can cut it around the former and have enough
strength left in the cover system. 22.00 US from a supplier in FLA. I'm
looking for a closer dealer. I'll miss you all in March I've got to go south
a little earlier this year, so I'll probably miss SnF too Bummer!! ( It will
keep the wife happy though) and I don't want to catch AIDS. You know, airport

Curt, I use (high quality) stainless steel hose clamps to hold the tubes in
place. I drill it through the "band" and rivet it to the bulkhead down low.
this way one hand in though the access hole with a nut driver can release
the clamp if you ever needed to change the hose! I showed this to a very
experienced float operator and he told me most certified stuff just has the
hose hanging loose in the float!!!! I wouldn't want this as the hose could
curl up and not be in the water you need to pump, or over time wear through
the skin as it flops around!

I don't know about the bilge pump fitting were you want it, but I can give
you the measurements tomorrow of both the long and short pumps. I have both
in the hanger. Let me know if the locker door fits, as Howard has been
looking for a set for his floats since before I built them and they are
always just a 1/4" to big for where they need to go!! Although he probably
doesn't want these anymore, as he is going to remove all the plastic bull
dog inspection covers and replace them with aluminum this spring! Probably
will build an aluminum locker door while he is at it! The plastic covers
retainer rings break every time some curious spectator steps on a lid at an
airshow and he is tired of buying and installing new ones!!!

Must be rough having to go South early, but like you said you don't want to
get "Aviation Induced Divorce Syndrome". We usually go south (caribean) this
time of year, but the wife has pnemonia again and can't take the chance with
an "8000 foot" cabin pressure. She's having a hard enough time breathing on
the ground!!
