hi all just a little information update re; wingtips

last week I removed my stock MAM round tips and replaced them with Fife tips
that I got from Jim Cole

I am very pleased (I had the benifit of checking speeds just before the
change, so the info is relatively accurate and at the same outside
temperature)

stall speed dropped from 50 mph to 47 at slow flight attitude and cruise at
2400 increased from 108 to 111mph using the gps two directions parallel to
the runway

climb is more difficult to determine because it is so weight sensitive but I
was seeing 1800fpm steady

control near the ground is excellent

So that 2 extra ft of wing certainly has some effect bob fisher

Mike, I don't remember any plywood detail for 611E. Be careful to
trial
fit your tps to the end ribs. Our (std) tips were so poor that I had to
make a rib to fit the right tip. Our tip strobe power packs are mounted on
the end of the main spar and we made the tips screw removable for access. I
wouldn't do that again! Rather drill the rivets and retouch the paint if
required. Be sure you mount the tips symmetrically so that the tip chord
lines are parallel.

Thanks Ralph,
I was thinking maybe an access cover in the bottom of the tips for access,
they are pretty big.

What is the correct way to mount the tips? In between the outboard rib
rivets, (not much room), or just inboard of the rib and going through the
skin only?
Thanks,
Mike Betti

Mike,
The tips are riveted through the skin and the rib. The rib / skin
existing rivets should be flush so the tip lays flat on the skin. Suggest
drilling the holes in the skin / rib to #40 and then using a hole finder
to drill the tips, clecoing, and the drilling up to #30. After that the
tip trim line is easy.
