[rebel-builders] Rebel rudder/brake pedals

Post by Ron Shannon » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:20 am

Allen,

You might check the fuselage section of 254R's site
(http://tinyurl.com/y89fr4) where there are several pictures of the way
Jim set up the rudder pedals. The manual, at least the new 03/02/06
Chapter 20 version (Controls Installation) does mention possibly needing
to trim a couple of threads off the rods -- which may be related, or not.

I'm in the process of adding the brake cylinders now. I did have to
grind off the ears where the bottom of the cylinders attach a bit, so
the cylinders would reach the holes, but don't have the pedals remounted
in the fuse yet. Will let you know if there's any clearance problem, but
Jim was so careful with this stuff, I'd be surprised if there are any.
In any case, perhaps those pics will help.

Hi all,

A couple of questions concerning the pedal setup.

I have the pedals assembled on a piece of plywood. I'm using left/right rudder pedals aligned as neutral and allowing 1.5 inches travel each way. With this setup and full right rudder, the right brake bottom attach fitting hits the floor unless I shorten the pushrods. Is this the norm? I mocked it up with scrap and about 1/2 inch shorter seems to work.

If I position the pedals as shown in the manual (delrin bearing just outboard of the engine mounts), the left brake cylinder attach bracket lines up with the middle of the engine mount. Do I move the whole assembly back from the firewall to clear this. Is there a standard height and distance forward of the pedal pivot for this attach bracket (I don't have the template mentioned in the upgrade bulletin).

If anyone has pictures of a working setup, I'd love to see them. Of the pictures I found online, I couldn't tell if the pushrod lengths were changed and there were no engine mounts visble.

As always, thanks in advance for the help.

Ron,

Been there, done that. No pictures of brake cylinders.

Several of the posts in the archives indicated that it is tricky to get it
right. Hate to reinvent the wheel if I don't have to.
