[rebel-builders] Avex rivet source?

Post by Mike Davis » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:16 am

Hi Ted,

Don't know about a US source, but there is a method to the naming vs.
size...

The first number is the type of rivet, the second is the diameter, and the
third and fourth are the grip length. Here are the most common rivets we
use.

RV-1410 1/8" X 3/16"
RV-1414 1/8" X 5/16"
RV-1613 3/16" X 1/4"
RV-1619 3/16" X 3/8"
RV-1621 3/16" X 1/2"
RV-4412 1/8" X 3/16" COUNTERSUNK
RR-5404 1/8" X 1/4" STAINLESS STEEL
RR-5406 1/8" X 3/8" STAINLESS STEEL
RR-5604 3/16" X 1/4" STAINLESS STEEL
RR-5606 3/16" X 3/8" STAINLESS STEEL
RR-6403 1/8" X 3/16" CLOSED END (TYPICAL TANK RIVET)

Subject: [rebel-builders] Avex rivet source?

I've been looking around the web and can't seem to readily find a source
for
the Avex RV-1410 or RV-4412 rivets (besides Murphy that is). I'd like to
find a U.S. source.

I know that Aircraft Spruce lists the Cherry BSP & BSC as roughly
equivalent
(I may end up ordering these if I can't find a good source for Avex ones).
ACS also has some Avex (as do a couple of other places), but they are
different (e.g. 1601-0410 series??) than the RV-xxxx numbering series
found
in the Murphy manual.

Anyone found a U.S. based source for the Avex rivet?

Last, is there any rhyme or reason to the Avex numbering scheme? E.G. an
RV-1410 is 1/8" x 3/16"--other than memorizing such?

Thank you!

Ted

[rebel-builders] Avex rivet source?

Ted,

Use the sizes from Mike below and try the following sources:

www.hansonrivet.com

and

www.rapidrivet.com

Please don't forget that the mandrel and the rivet body are often different types and the strength of the rivet depends on the combination.

BSP and BSC are "pop" rivets. Avoid them for anything structural as they
are Very different than avex and among other things, they do not expand
radially like avex and may tend to get rusty mandrels.
The avex from Spruce are fine.
Best prices are usually direct from textron and there have been quality
issues with substitutes so I will only use textron part numbers.
The 1691 series avex is American made and works just fine. Not sure if
still true but the 1661 series is the same avex rivet with the same
specs but made in Britain. AFAIK Zenith will only use the 1661 British
made rivet because of better quality control and I've always been able
to get the 1661 from textron in Toronto at just under 5 cents cdn.. They
have facilities in the USA as well.
BTW- order a lot more than you think you will need ;(

[rebel-builders] Avex rivet source?

Post by Ted Waltman » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:16 am

Thanks Bob, but maybe I'm just a bit dense today. I went the site you
indicate below, and, again, there's no RV-1410, or 4412 or 1521, etc. There
seem to be the same set (same # system) that one sees at ACS or other sites
that are like 1661-0410, etc. There's nothing on their Avex page that
indicates any counter-sunk rivets either. What am I missing?
