Engine RPM from sound

Post by Mike Davis » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:13 am

A few different methods to check your engine tach were discussed here
recently, but I have come across one more that looks quite interesting. I
asked a question recently about preferred props on the Cessna 150 list, and
during the discussion about props and static RPM the topic came up again.
One of the list members posted this link to a web site where you can
download free software for pocket PCs or notebooks that will tell you your
engine RPM within 1 RPM (claimed) by the sound of the engine!

I thought I'd give it a try this weekend and compare it to the readings of
my engine tach and optical tach. My optical tach reads 100 RPM lower than
the engine tach, so hopefully this software will match one or the other.
I'm also considering using Mike Kimballs method of duct tape and ramp
lights.
