Mike,

If you have time, check your local hobby store, most carry irons of different sizes for doing RC airplanes, since most/all are fabric covered.

Hi Mike: I confiscated my wife's old iron years ago. - It is a T-FAL
ultraglide with variable settings which I calibrated with a candy
thermometer. I can easily exceed 350 deg. in the highest setting (linen).
( Hole burning range, but don't ask me how I know) This also has a Teflon
sole plate which really helps gliding over polytack. I also have a hobby
iron from Monokote 115 volt, 165 watt, which is a must for sealing edges and
hard to get at places. This one was from a hobby shop years (35+) ago and
still works great Bob J (Rebel 192.)

only seen couple brands in stores and tfal was not one, only seems to be

Oshkosh they tell you to go to your local discount store and buy an
iron with the variable temperature control. (And if I remember
correctly, they said the cheaper irons were as good as the expensive
ones.)

To calibrate the iron you put heat sink compound on a paper towel (the
compound is silicon based so they don't want you to contaminate the
face of the iron and transfer the silicon to the fabric) and then
stick a thermometer in the heat sink compound. They recommended
marking the variable dial with your different temperatures as a
starting point for next usage but checking the temperature each time
before you start the shrinking process.

Suggest you call Millers if you need any tips. They always seemed
very helpful at the shows.

"1. Any Sunbeam model( non-shutoff) that starts with 39. For example a 3951,
3907, etc.

2. Any "Quick and Easy" Black and Decker (non-shutoff) iron. The less bells
and whistles, the better. "

It also states it must be minimum of 1100 wattts.

The manual is cheap and very complete. I highly recommend it.

Mike,

I've left my flaperons for later so I didn't have to worry about damaging
the fabric in storage. Figured finding the iron would be the easy part.

Just did a quick search on the internet and found even the $15 irons have
auto shut off. I would try a Polyfibre dealer next. Let us know what you
find.
