There is a fellow here with the 9 cylinder version (not on a Rebel)
which I think is 150 hp but that's a lot of spark plugs and a lot of
cylinders to maintain!

wow he must have got one of the very first ones. I thought they just
started shipping them in the spring. If I had any idea how much work I have
had to do to change my engine I might have gone for one too.

No I still think you made the right choice Drew for a great many
reasons.The Rotec is not technically advanced. For example I'll take
forged parts over billet machined parts every time. It has the risk of
only one part source and I'd predict higher maintanance. And it has no
fuel consumption or weight advantage from what I can see. It should be a
smooth engine but you'd have to want the radial look. The diesels are
far more intriguing to me if one wants to get adventurous.

I'm nor really regretting my choice but I do like the radial look. I hadn't
considered the single source for parts aspect thats a good point. I also
like the thought of a diesel engine. I phoned mikael zoche about 10 years
ago and offered my airframe as a test bed to show off his engine around
north america. He wasn't even a little interested and it looks like he's
accomplished nothing since then.

Considering an 0320 150-160 HP is 260 lbs... plus or minus, I would find 224 lbs for the 9 cyl. rotec hard to believe. Thanks for clearing that up Ron.

I wouldn't straight off doubt the weight spec. Rotec has been around, is
successful with the 7 cyl, and successful in getting the 9 cyl to market. I
doubt if that kind of thing is possible with faking something as simple as
weight. As well, although lots of cylinders -- mostly aluminum -- the crank,
case, and cams are short. (i don't know how cams are done in radials)

The real story on the Rotec IMO is the low end torque. Notice the BIG prop
they are turning -- something like 95" IIRC, and at ~2000rpm, 150 horses.
Big prop disk, great rpm, low weight, and that bugger is going to launch a
Rebel like nobody's business. I recently emailed Rotec with a couple
questions and they had said a 2-blade 80" would be possible, although I don't
know how well it would be pitch wise for a Rebel. I imagined 80" was closer
to the max diameter possible for the Rebel, and/or that particular engine
might require a 3 blade.

BTW, I'm still hoping Gesoco is still working on the 125hp R-263. No update
on their web site in almost a year.

I concluded that the installed weight of an 0-320 was going to be more
like 300 lbs. and I think that did not include the prop.

The numbers quoted by Rotec don't seem to include the exhaust collector
ring, oil tank and plumbing, recommended aux electric scavenge pump,
etc. The prop gearing helps them get the weight per hp. down. That's the
major reason that a Rotax 912 is so light. However weight per hp tends
to go up with the number of cylinders. Billet machining guarantees that
some parts will be a bit heavier.

Another gentleman had me scratching my head for a bit. While looking at
the 9 cylinder engine which has a normal firing order of
1-3-5-7-9-2-4-6-8, he said "too bad that 5 cylinders fire on the first
crankshaft rotation but only 4 fire on the second crankshaft rotation" ;)

The nose looks too long. Is that because the 115hp(?) is light? I wonder if
the 150hp version will be mounted closer to the firewall.
