[rebel-builders] O-540 baffles & FWF

Post by Tim Saxton » Sun Feb 19, 2012 10:52 am

Charlie,

I also purchased the MAM firewall forward kit. I didn't get the oil cooler
or exhaust system as I wanted a different solution. I also worked with
Murphy to modify the engine mount to allow the rear facing fuel servo to
clear the lower horizontal brace (they had lost the patterns they had used
several years ago). The modified mount is necessary for the IO-540 G and K
engines (and perhaps others).

MAM doesn't have paper templates for the angle valve engines. I think I will
also start with cardboard protoypes but I will have to do less tweaking if I
can find angle valve patterns to start with.

FYIW
I bought the MAM firewall forward kit and new Lycoming O-540 & Hartzell
prop
(through Murphy) - some few years ago. Good price at the time on the
engine
and prop. When all was finished I had a number of FWF parts (hardware and
hoses) left over, but still was much cheaper and less work than doing it
all
myself. The cowl took a lot of cutting & fitting - but I guess this is
normal.
As far as the baffles -- they furnished some paper patterns that weren't
too accurate. I ended up making about three sets of cardboard patterns,
then
even ended up re-making several baffle sections that still needed
tweaking.
The rear ones were especially frustrating and had to be re-made several
times
to fit. Lots of trials and lots of errors.
