You are talking the JDM three piece wheel correct?? I'll go have a look at
the spare set I have in the shop to figure out what you are talking about.

Ya Wayne
It's the three piece wheel and is impossible to assemble any different than
the way I have it as far as I can see. I've built a few of these setups for
other aircraft and know the importance of the spacing of the caliper bracket
or the torque plate as it is known outside the Murphy world. Murphy wants a
picture and will replace which tells me there maybe a few caliper brackets
out there that are possibly defective. The floating pressure plate assembly
is right up against the caliper bracket.

Guess I'd need a picture too to help you. Basically the entire caliper unit
slides on the pins so no matter which pad wears they both self center. There
is problems putting them on the bungee style gear if you don't relieve the
drag brace gusset to clear the caliper pin nuts so they can slide. Probably
not an issue since I figure you are putting these on spring gear?

Yes, from what u described it would work as is but as soon as the floating
pad began to wear, the floating plate is already against the torque plate
and then the piston would eventually bend it. There had to be a distance
from the floating plate and torque plate equal to or just less than the
thickness of the pad itself. Computor is slow and am waiting for one of the
boy's girlfriends to email the pics she took this evening. I'll try and

Steve..got your pictures and what appears to be missing is MAM used to ship
a .063 (or slightly wider - I eyeballed it) washer that fit between the
torque plate and the axle attach flange (either that or I made it myself for
Howard's in 1996 but highly unlikey). This spaces the torque plate in
towards the wheel and almost aligns the disk with the torque plate edge. The
better fix would be to throw the axle in a lathe and take about .080 (or a
match value for your offset problem) off the inner bearing stop on the axle
and then it would line up perfectly. Would be real easy for MAM to change
their CNC program or measurements as well to make them all correctly in the
future.

Was on the phone with Murphy and they said it is the way it's suppose to be
and will warranty any future problem. Said they just changed a set of pads
on an Elite and the wear was even. I will make a 1/8 spacer and put between
the torque plate and the axle as I don't have a lathe but sure would love to
have one! Would u mind if I sent them a copy of the message u sent me?
Really don't know what it would be worth but u hit the nail on the head as
to what I was trying to explain to them. Thanks for ur great support

I'm pretty sure it's already been read Steve! ;O) But you can pass it on
direct if you want to.

You need at least 2/3rds the thickness of the brake pad as a starting
clearance between the floating plate and the torque plate. At that point you
should be replacing the pads anyhow. Doesn't take long some times either. We
threw new pads on the Elite wheel gear as it came off to go to amphibs a
couple weeks back. Totally worn out to the rivets at 173 hrs!

Steve actually had the opposite problem...his wheel needed to be further in.
MAM originally supplied a fitted washer/spacer for the torque plate to be
spaced off the bolting flange towards the wheel to line things up with the
brake disc. For some reason this is no longer being included in kits and
they haven't machined the axle bearing stop down to make up the difference
either.

behind. I had this same problem. When I was in Chilliwak last June I
talked to Robin about it and the solution we came up with is this.

The wheel needs to be further outboard from the caliper mounting plate.
Robin provided a 4130 tube that just fits over the axle. I cut a small
piece off this tube (about 3/16" to 1/4" long) and put this on the axle
before mounting the wheel. This provides room for the caliper to move as
the brake pad wears.

You are talking the JDM three piece wheel correct?? I'll go have a look at
the spare set I have in the shop to figure out what you are talking about.

Went to assemble the calipers today and noticed that the brake pad plate
the one that floats) is up against the caliper bracket. It is in
alignment with the disk but as soon as there is some wear on the pads, the
piston will eventually bend the plate. Has there been any trouble with the
calipers around the serial numbers of 637? It is not a Matco system. The
only way to use what is here is to put spacers between the axle and the
caliper bracket which would the bracket farther inside the wheel assembly.

When I talked to Murphy, they knew nothing about this. Spoke ot Stephane
who talked with Darrel and they were totally unaware that the problem
exhisted. Makes u wonder sometimes........

I am beginning to believe you guys on the Manual problems. I did not have
any problems with my Rebel and manual, but this quick build Moose is a
totally different animal.(no pun intended). I've got stuff done that wasn't
suppose to be done, stuff not done that was suppose to be done, but
fortunately - I'm not done (yet) - Yesterday I discovered while working on
upgrading the tail stinger area, I have one side skin at .032 (RH) and the
left side at .040 - Gee, I wonder what it was suppose to be?? It made
shimming the Elevator mounting brackets a bit interesting as these side
skins end up under them with the flanges. Anyone else run into this on the
quick build. (which may not end up being so quick) - Bob J Moose 226.
