Very first installation of CLAMAR 2200's to a Murphy Elite ready to roll.

I've done my part and have also run it up and down the strip to see that it
will get airborne in 600 feet on very soft grass!.......owner should have it
in the sky shortly after he has his next break from shuttling folks on Air
Canada!

Heavy for my liking....but what can you do? Still lighter than Whip 2100's!
Good thing he has a test flight permit for 2200 lbs gross! And the new C of
A will follow rom TC at that weight once he submits his climb test.

Electric pump/pressure switches etc in one float...back up hand pump under
the instrument panel edge and gear switch and indicator lights in panel (I
think the 7 wire run to the pump/switches - 16 feet- is worth 10lbs alone!).
Jump seat (boat seat on slide out tracks with seat belt attached to seat) in
the back.....full radio stack of Bendix King..TX/Comm/Comm-GPS/Audio
panel/Full gyros etc. O-360..76" metal Sensenich prop..full paint inside and
out. Floats got painted as well.....Heavier than necessary (IMHO) vertical
attach struts with the reinforce web running down the center of the
extrusions...

1527lbs and empty c of g at 11.75 inch aft of datum. Guess I "guessed" the
spot for the floats right! Seems to rotate nicely after about 550 feet on
the soft grass and wants to fly!

Guess you haven't tested them yet on the water. Any advantage expected with
the fibreglass bottom shape to get off the water faster?

Nope like I said...just waiting for the owner to get a break in his
schedule. Worked with me all last week and Mon/Tuesday this week but crew
sched. called him yesterday and he had to fly to Vancouver today. He'll be
back home the am to catch some sleep...but not sure if long enough to do
some flying.

The glass bottom is supposed to be less drag in the water. I'll wait to see
it as I think our rivets probably help break the surface tension!...as do
our "air" rails. These floats have no rails but do have a nice shape to the
bottoms so we'll see. He's on Lake Temagami with me....so we'll have a
chance somewhere thru the season to do a "drag race" I'm sure!

O.K., I'll start it ... Have you ever seen dimples, vortex generators, or
anything else on the bottom of a racing boat? Slick, clean, blueprinted
perfectly flat, and sometimes coated with graphite impregnated epoxy to
make it even slicker! I think it's all about: Air (gas) compresses, and water
(fluid) doesn't, therefore the dimples on the basketball!
This should get the engineers fired up.

I understand all that...and actually have the hull design computer lofting
programs to go with it! I'm talking breaking the water surface...ie breaking
suction to get it off the water..not accelerate it thru it. We'll see how it
does...probably next week by the sounds of it. Gotta get it paper legal
tonight/tomorrow and go from there.

Bob it's all a trade off ! Depends what you want in a
float..looks..weight...buoyancy...etc. I actually tried to steer the owner
away from Glass floats for his alum airplane but there was no doing it. He
was stuck on getting them and nothing I could say changed that. He knows
what he wanted and is well educated in float flying. He wet his ears flying
for Lakeland (Temagami's outfitter) in the 70's flying their Beaver, flew a
few years for the MNR in the Turbine Beavers (best investment our Government
ever made...bought new in '67 and still flying them!). Flew Canadian..then
all it's trade offs to end up at Air Canada and wants to get back to his
roots. He wanted these CLAMARS and no ands ifs or buts. From what I've seen
they are no heavier than Montana's 2200's....so it all comes down to what
you want...alum or glass. They are much lighter than Whips new 2150 amphibs.
Should be no leakage issues with the glass floats unless you "hole" them.
Landing gear is simple over center design and very robust with 5.00 x 5
tires or optional 6.00 x 6. Grove amphibious wheel assemblies. Guess the
only thing I don't like is the nose wheel strictly being held down by
hydraulic pressure...but probably not a big deal with a 500 psi system and
any "line shock" from landing loads is taken by a nitrogen accumulator in
the down pressure line.
