Weight & balance

Post by B&O Johnson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:21 pm

In regards to the weight and balance, my recently completed Rebel "652" came
in at 978 lbs. painted and upholstered. It has an O320 H2AD 160 hp 9:1
compression ratio (so the book says) on a standard location firewall (not
cut back) with a 38 lb Sensenich metal prop. My Battery is an Odyssey (35
lb) dry cell located between the2nd and 3rd bulkheads past the crank in the
fus. My empty C.of G. is 11.42 A.o D. Calculated max aft without exceeding
gross is 18 .06. It fly's great. I wanted the metal prop for two reasons. 1/
There has been to many cases of reported problems with the (black plastic)
ground adjustable on the O320,s and 2/ It just made more sense to me that
the heavier metal prop would make the engine run smoother-and it sure does.
The same reasoning applied to my choice of battery. Weight generally means
more cranking power-and once again it proved out. That Odyssey really cranks
my beast over.-For what it is worth.-Bob J.
