Which end of the spar?

Post by Hibbs » Fri Feb 17, 2012 5:47 pm

While waiting for the right wing's tank to cure, I am starting on the
left wing. I am trying to figure out which end of the spar is the
root. Measured from the end, the 2nd line of holes (for the rib attach)
is 12.5" from one end and 12.25" from the other end. I thought about
making it the same as the right wing (12.25" is the root), but am not
sure that makes sense since the ribs are reversed. Any thoughts, does
it matter? I could wait till tuesday and ask Grant at Murphy, but I
want to make some progress today.

Which end of the spar?

Post by klehman » Fri Feb 17, 2012 5:47 pm

Hi Scott
Very Interesting!
Both ends of both my spars seem to have the rivet holes in 12.25" near as I can
tell on the finished wing. The punched holes in the skins will have to line up
with the center of the ribs one way or t'other. My ouside edges of my outboard
and inboard ribs do line up with the ends of the spar and the ends of the skins.

Which end of the spar?

Scott, this happens, sometimes, because MAM uses 4 X 12 sheet to make their
parts. Sometimes sheet comes about a 1/4" longer than 12 feet. When they
prepunch from one end the "extra" is left at the other end. Put all 3 spars
on the table together and see how the holes line up on all them. The front
and rear spars are committed to go only one way so make the distance from
the first hole to the root the same for all (if you can). If you are lucky
all 3 spars will have the same extra 1/4" on the same end. This will allow
you to build the wing "square" without the optical illusion that something
is wrong due to the main spar sticking out the extra 1/4". The ribs being
"reversed" has nothing to do with it as they are still centered on the
holes. If you can't make them all the same, mark a line with a square (or
trim them), while you have them all on the table together. Then when you
install the skins you won't try to get them to line up with a spar end, that
is 1/4" further out than it is supposed to be by mistake.

Blue skies,
