Why Stainless? True, it looks prettier, but who's gonna see it? If, for
some reason, you just feel the need, a suggestion; Assuming that the
original is machined from 4130, I'd be a bit careful about the alloy
choice. The 300 series alloys (308, 316, etc.) are not as hard as the
4130. Also, they don't respond to heat treatment for additional
strengthening as the original piece may be heat treated (just a guess). Not
as hard means not as strong and all that means more likely to fail. If you
must do it out of a corrosion resistant alloy, I might suggest 17-4PH. This
is a hardenable 'stainless' alloy that does respond to heat treatment and
will mimic the mechanical properties of the original part. Your machine
shop will have the material in the 'normalized' condition. After machining,
tell them you want it heat treated to 125ksi minimum.
Personally, I'd stick with the 4130, but that's me.
