[rebel-builders] Beaver pitot - Cranfield/Kemble

Thanks Brian

It always puzzled me why the fin was there - no one seemed to know in
Labrador those many years ago !

Cranfield show has now moved to Kemble in Glos, and is now called Flying for
Fun and will be on 18, 19, and 20th of August this year. Hope to get along
for at least 2 days of it.

Give us a call if you're over here this summer (also if you fancy a couple
of days work while you're here :-) )

the 195 and Harvard. I have been assured by many in the know the "fin" is
just to hold the pitot cover on!!!
Interestingly I have worked on a Moose that has one...had to use big
doublers on the main and rear spar to take the "barrel"!
When is Cranfield this year?

I have 1940's vintage one on my Moose and the fin is functional. The pitot
runs back into the chamber that is the "shark fin" then another tube extends
up into this chamber and then runs out the back to the pitot instruments, i.e.
it is not one continues tube and moisture can run out a small drain hole you
will find in the bottom back of the fin. That static line also has a riser that
goes part way up the fin but of course is separate chamber. There is a
drawing in the A&P airframe handbook.

Thanks Scott...so it is in fact a chamber to prevent water in the
line...pretty smart.
Still prefer the old Beaver pilot's explanation I spoke to...heck what would
hold the pitot cover in place on the Pacific North West Coast!!

I looked into it when I got mine because I have seen them mounted fin down
on some homebuilts so wasn't sure which way to go. Fin up is the only way
the moisture trap will work correctly.

No - not flying yet but soon (whatever that means)
