Super Rebel vs Moose

I am considering building a Super Rebel or a Moose. If one were to purchase
a partially built Super Rebel to put on amphib floats, what Moose mods would
you recommend? I have a booklet from Murphy outlining I believe 15
modifications. I have been following posts for awhile and was thinking of the
M14 engine, however after the last few posts on weights, fuel, oil usage and
cruise I am now thinking Lycoming, although I love the radial look. I assume if
an M14 is used then all mods would need to be accomplished. I understand
there would be performance tradeoffs.

Can one expect decent performance and safety on amphibs with a 260hp
Lycoming by leaving it a Super Rebel and keeping it light? I seldom if ever fly
with more than myself (unfortunately about 1.5 times the weight of a legal
FAA person) and one passenger with ample camping gear. Are there
upgrades that should be considered if doing this?

I would plan on leaving it on amphibs year around, however, realize resale
would be greater if it could be converted to gear. Is the main gear mod
needed if using the Lycoming and leaving it a SR? How difficult is the main
gear mod if the fuselage is mostly built without the floorboards riveted in? It
appears there are gear upgrades available from others instead of Murphy, are
they easier to install?

Stan,
I would consider selling you my Super Rebel that has had Montana
Floats on it, A great flying airplane ready to bolt a set of floats back on
it! My Moose will be flying with in the next few months and I am out of room in
the hanger and getting a little short of money. I got about $105,000 in it.

Chris Gill flies a stock Super Rebel with the Lycoming from Murphy on
Montana straight floats out of Lake Hood in Anchorage. He was once asked by
the tower what in the world he had for an engine because they were impressed
with the way the plane lept off the water. There is absolutely nothing
wrong with a stock SR behind a Lycoming. No Moose mods are required. There
are a few SR Service Bulletins that should be incorporated.

What Moose mods should you do to convert to an SR to a Moose? All of them.
Again, no need to if you are using a Lycoming.

I'd just like to put in my 2 cents here... if you're going to fly an SR off
of floats, it would probably be a good idea to put in the V-brace from the
wing roots to the firewall even if you are running a Lycoming on an
otherwise stock SR.
