Hi All
Need a question answered so I can complete a final parts order. I have
several 4' vernier control cables from Cessnas. The rod end assemblies are
too lengthy and non flexable to exit the firewall mid way, go down towards
the bottom of the engine and turn towards the carb. A 3' cable would be a
nice length to exit the firewall at the bottom and then to the carb but I
don't like the cables down around the peddles. What has the "norm" been
here when it comes to cable length and where they exit the firewall? Do the
cables from AS&S have a shorter rod end assembly that permits a 90* bend
before the carb if coming down the firewall? Thanks to all that reply

Steve,
This may not apply if you are using something other than a Lycoming O-320. We are using a Lyc O-360 and will mount the throttle / mixture controls at the carb end using a Van's plate that goes between the carb and sump. A rod end connection will work on the throttle but a bug nut and cable sheath clamp will have to be used on the mixture. There is simply not enough room between the firewall and plate for a mixture rod end. A special cable length will be required for the carburetor. The mixture cable can be trimmed to fit.

The cables pass through the fire wall quite high up via cable eyeballs (from ACS) with a "tilt" feature allowing the cable to pass through at an angle to the firewall. This minimizes the control cable bends but even so they are near, but not exceeding, the bend limits. The installation is not completed but my measurements and rough "installation" show it will work.

Thanks for the reply, Ralph.
Are u using the cables from MAM or AS&S? The steel telescopic tubes on
these Cessna cables I have are, like I said earlier, very long which
prevents me from curling them at 90* towards the throttle lever if I come in
from the top. I was talking to Alvin Adams last nite and he was pretty sure
he used 4' cables and came down from the top with no problem. I'm just
hoping that if I order the cables from AS&S, that the metal setup at the end
is actually shorter. The look shorter in the catalog anyways! Am using the
inner wire cable type control for the mixture anyways and am not forseeing
any problem there.

I am new here, so I'll assume that AS&S are the guys in Lake Havasu Arizona
who build cables for Aircraft Spruce ... if so, I found that I could call them
direct and get ANYTHING I wanted cable wise. They built a custom set for my
Bonanza utilizing one part off the old cables (a wierd one-off panel nut)
resulting in a "signed off by my IA" ... "Repair", making life easy, inexpensive,
and resulting in an upgraded look without aftermarket "cheese". Great

Steve,

I just purchased and installed a friction style throttle from AS&S and
moved my old vernier throttle across to use for mixture. The old vernier
had the metal setup at the end removed and was installed just clamped.
The new friction throttle came with a fairly long metal setup which
including the swivel connector to the throttle point on the carb caused
it to reach right back thru the firewall where I secured it with a made
up clamp allowing it to come about 1/"2 inside the cabin. Sealed with
butyl. I would say there would be no way to use that particular 3' long
cable from above without rigging an arrangement that allowed the cable
to terminate vertically. One choice you have is to simply cut off the
termination and use it clamped properly like it was originally in FOKM
if you are serious about bringing it in vertically firewall side.

I don't know for sure but suspect that the vernier cables have the same
termination as the friction lock cables. At a guess the AS&S
termination setup is 8" long by itself. Hope this helps
