Rebel Elevator rigging

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sat Feb 18, 2012 2:37 pm

On my own Rebel with the stab mounted as MAM suggested @ 1.0* nose up I have
always carried about 5* up elevator in cruise. Exactly the same on amphibs.
When I did Howard's (and Bob's XWI) I mounted the stabs at 0.7/0.8 degrees
and they both pretty much fly in cruise with neutral elevator. All aircraft
have firewall in original position and O-320's on the nose. One difference
is mine is an older conical mount and the others are dynafocals and as such
have higher thrust lines...which may help pull the nose down slightly over
the lower thrust line conical mount....but I still feel it has more to do
with stab incidence and why Alan is going to shim his Elite Stab to confirm
and get rid of his carrying up elevator in cruise.

Note I also changed the subject to elevator rigging from rudder pedal!

Cheers,
Wayne

Alvin, I would definitely set elevator at 0 degrees with a comfortable
stick
position. My Rebel flew basically hands off on neutral trim position with
an
O320 up front and original firewall position. I did not (yet) have a
chance
to float equip a Rebel, but if rigged and balanced properly this should
not
change. All you float drivers out there should be able to shed some
accurate
data on this.- Bob J

read you postings with great interest as i am about to install nico
press
on my elevator cables.I assumed i would rig cables to have stick in
comfortable position with elevator level with stabilizer. This was the
case
with my PA-11.Al says he flies level flight on floats with 10 degree up
elevator. Why would a aircraft be designed like this.Hope mine will not
be
like this.Seams sort of inefficient.Should i set up for comfortable
stick
at o degrees or 10 degree up.

Yup, same with mine. My trim is set to be slightly up elevator, which I had back on wheels as well.
