Panel: EFIS

My impression too Ted. You need back up "steam" gauges anyhow. I can still
remember Howard calling me to come to the lake (40 minute drive) and me
sitting out in the airplane (at dock...in the water) on the phone to Grand
Rapids Tech doing a step by step reload..... when his EIS system defaulted
beyond the operators manual. Nothing worked. Oil
Pressure/Temp/Tach/CHT/EGT/Volt/Amp etc. Give me old "Steam" gauges
anyday..especially for VFR and the occasional trip over the top in "cotton
batten land"! What would happen if he was 6 hours from a road? Fly it and
hope U don't hear a loud bang to ruin your day!! :O )

I agree that an EFIS would be sweet; Wish I had one in my plane.
However, if something goes wrong everything goes wrong. How do you fly
partial panel if you lose the screen? <grin> I recently had to send in
my artificial horizon for repair. I could still fly while it was away
since I had all the other instruments. What if you have to send in the
EFIS? Food for thought. Nonetheless, I'd like one.

If I was doing my panel now i'd want something like this.

instead of a bunch of steam gauges

Got it thanks. Fired up all the electronics tonight!

Now I need to find a good airspeed indicator, VOR, and then artificial

You placed the proper placard in the airplane and made the proper airframe
log entry before you flew I hope? Both actions are required to be legal.
:-)

Good point Ted Personally I'm willing to live with the risk. Flying my
rebel no panel wouldn't be much of a concern now that I've lots of time in it.

Alan Hepburn

Panel: EFIS

Post by Alan Hepburn » Sat Feb 18, 2012 2:33 pm

I am running the Grand Rapids EIS and EFIS, and so far have no complaints.
Pics on Wildcat, I believe. I have backup steam altimeter and airspeed -
both 2 1/4". The altimeter is non-precision. If I equip it for IFR, I will
add a simple TruTrack autopilot rather than an electric horizon. That way,
I have something that will keep the airplane upright which is still useful
under normal conditions. A lot cheaper than an electric horizon too. I
would also add one of these little alternators that bolt on the vacuum pump
pad.

For VFR, the steam gauges are adequate backup. I was able to get the
transponder correlation signed off against the altimeter in the EFIS,
despite the fact that it was not TSO'd. In fact, he said he should have
been calibrating his test set against the EFIS! I did install a TSO'd
encoder, despite the fact that there is an encoder in the Grand Rapids
system. I was told that the avioncs shop wouldn't sign it off, but I
wonder.
