Post by pequeajim » Sat Feb 18, 2012 2:23 pm

For you guys in the states; do you buy builder's inurance for your projects?
If so, what's it cost and where do you get it?

Jim!

Builder's insurance

Post by Mike Betti » Sat Feb 18, 2012 2:23 pm

All the builders I know don't buy insurance. I looked into a policy to cover
$30K when I started my project and they wanted $700 a year. I know Falcon in
WI does policys and if you go to EAA.org you may find others.

Dear Mike,

I have my project insured for $40,000 with Skysmith Insurance. Premium was
$496. The City of Albuquerque insisted on it.

Builder's insurance

Post by Ted Waltman » Sat Feb 18, 2012 2:23 pm

Ok, someone is going to ask, so it might as well be me. How in the
blazes did the City of Albuquerque even find out you were building a
plane???

I could build 10 planes--and probably take off from the street in front
of my house--and the city of Lakewood (Denver) wouldn't have a clue (if
I took off at midnight <grin>).

Yep, Wayne, that's it. These days the aviation department keeps a very

WoW! I don't think anyone around here cares if I have something I am
building in my garage. I was just wondering if this was the norm? My
homeowners will very likely not cover it if my house burns down. I won't be
ready to move it to the airport till next summer/fall.

If my shop burns down I won't file a claim for an airplane. I'll file a

Builder's insurance

Post by bransom » Sat Feb 18, 2012 2:23 pm

I have State Farm homeowners and the policy language is pretty wordy about
not including *anything* to do with anything that flies. So, the sheet
metal, maybe, but the avionics and instruments I'd have to convince are for a
very strange car hobby. I'm self insured, not crazy about it, but tough. I
will reconsider when I get more invested (engine, avionics).

WoW! I don't think anyone around here cares if I have something I am
building in my garage. I was just wondering if this was the norm? My
homeowners will very likely not cover it if my house burns down. I won't be

ready to move it to the airport till next summer/fall.

Builder's insurance

If it covered holes drilled in the wrong location, I would buy it.

cover
$30K when I started my project and they wanted $700 a year. I know Falcon
in

Builder's insurance

Post by Mike Kimball » Sat Feb 18, 2012 2:23 pm

I have State Farm too. I'll have to check that out. At least everything
except the avionics and my gear box is automotive. A custom, aluminum car.
Or better yet, an airboat. I wonder if there is an airboat exclusion?

I have State Farm homeowners and the policy language is pretty wordy about
not including *anything* to do with anything that flies. So, the sheet
metal, maybe, but the avionics and instruments I'd have to convince are for
a
very strange car hobby. I'm self insured, not crazy about it, but tough. I

will reconsider when I get more invested (engine, avionics).

Boats are covered to $1500 on most house policies. Anything else has to be
valued and paid for including cars!
