Please excuse the simple questions, but what are the "horn" looking devices
on the side of the rebels that I see from time to time? Stall warnings?

They are called "venturis" ... they create a vacuum air supply to power
some of the gyroscopic flight instruments - Artificial Horizon, Turn &
Bank, Directional Gyro Compass etc

Basically they are "foolproof" - nothing to wear out .... the only thing
that might stop one is if a bird somehow dodged the propeller & stuck
itself in the intake side .... VERY unlikely

They do create a bit of drag .... but this is not a real problem with
100 knot aircraft - you only lose a knot or so - but in a 200 Knot
aircraft they steal a LOT of airspeed - that's why you don't see them on
modern or fast planes

Rick,
You can add to the list of drawbacks that they are usually not heated and
therefore tend to ICE up if one were foolish enough to fly into Icing
conditions.
I am old enough to remember the days in the old Stinson 108, while doing
our instrument work, that we would run the engine at full power while
holding the brakes. This would get the gyros to spin up before take off into
instrument conditions (real or simulated).

Haven't read all the answers yet...but Daryl's correct....that's what it's
for...I haven't hit a deer yet..and we have many that cross our field. Now
if it just worked on wild turkeys I'd be all set!

Last trip to the lake Leah couldn't hear my engine over head the cottage
(while she was inside)..but she did hear the venturi whistle from 600 feet
up and knew that I was back!
