Amphib axles

I finally got time to put some grease nipples on my amphib axles. I have
heard that MAM is doing it as standard now. I think it was Steve Sloan that
put a plastic tube between the cones so not as much grease has to be used.
Has any one else done this or does MAM new axles have a similar arrangement.
Without this doesn't the grease squirt out by the valve stem of the inner
tube? Also instead of the felt dust seals are there any rubber water
resistance one available?

Also anybody that is running a Subie there has been a big shake up at NSI.

Hey, Ray, I use a set of aluminum cylinders that keep the grease
in the axle bearing area. Julius machined them up for us. I think
Julius did something, too, to keep the water out with seals, but
you'll have to ask him. Mine are just standard ones, and I just
pump more grease in every time I come back from the water.

Did you get your prop fixed?

Was going to fly down last Monday to get it looked at. Filed my flight plan
(crossing US border) phoned custums and got my YVR code, jumped in started it
up and couldn't get the prop out of reverse so had to phone everybody back to
cancell. Ended up taking it off and driving it down. Got it all done which
was real good with what is going down at NSI, and is back on, just need to do
the wheel bearings now. Will give Julius a call tommorrow

Hey Ray,
I used a pvc pipe with the correct od and cut them to length to fit
between the wheel halfs. It was an electrical conduit if I remember right, with a
light schedule too.

Got my axels front and back drilled but need to find a cheap source for the
chrome plated bearings. Napa qouted my 250.00 each cup and bearing, Lindair
190.00, MAM say they don't have them and aircraft spruce says they don't
exist.

It's because of that price I drilled Howards axles 7 + years ago..... after
the first set didn't make it thru a season! 2nd set is still in there and
rolling fine! Look in the Yellow pages for a bearing supplier that carries
Timken. Here in Ontario it's Canada Bearing. CP's are not usually a stock
item and are hit and miss for availablility. Last time I had to wait over 6
months to get them and they are such a low volume that the CP will be
engaved by hand in front of the part #..

Don't know if they'd have the size you need, but I have always bought high
performance bearings for my model engines from: http://www.bocabearings.com/
They do carry bearings for more than just models.

Also remember though...if you are going the route of saving less than the
weight of a 1/3 tube of grease per wheel by using the "sleeve" (that
probably weighs an equal amount as the grease) you will need to drill some
drain holes in the wheel so they won't hold water and crack from ice
formation in the winter. Filling BOTH wheels completely takes less than
2 -12 ounce tubes of grease. I have not had any problems with the grease
effecting the tube (only the valve stem sees grease), nor a flat tire on
Howard's since they were put on in 1997.
