I believe the Scott 3400 series tailwheel would be a good candidate for
the Moose. Chief Aircraft has them for $1,400 U.S.

XPMODS also makes an excellent tailwheel (so I'm told), but it's pricey.
Basically a beefed up version of the Scott tailwheel.

Then there are the Alaska Bushwheel tailwheels:

An issue with all the above is that they are STC and PMA'd, meaning they
are priced above what the experimental market might otherwise like to
see.

The real issue with the above is that they reflect just the bracket &
wheel assembly. That for sure is part of the problem. The rest of the
problem--and perhaps even the most significant aspect of the whole
issue--is that totally inadequate stinger attach bracket(s) / design.
The Moose (and Rebel I assume?) stinger attaches via rigid, steel,
brackets leaving no room for flexing. Hence, one eventually gets
elongation of the stinger / bracket attach holes and cracking /
deformation of the brackets or bulkheads.

I can't speculate why this KNOWN ISSUE hasn't been addressed by the
factory. There has certainly been enough discussion about it--both over
the list and in person with multiple Murphy staff. Maybe someone else
can chime in regarding why no change has thus far been made. True, many
Moose go on floats, or at least spend a limited amount of time on
wheels; for them this isn't an [important] issue.

and a very sloppy "centre" pin. I can send you my post if you didn't
previously see it.

G'day

I have just returned home from a 1200 mile tour of outback Australia
in my 912S powered Rebel. Needless to say she flew wonderfully,
except for the fact that on paved runways she turned into a ground

Now I have done 99% of my flying off grass strips and thought that it

But my companion, who is a high hour commercial pilot and with lots of

in taildraggers was also having the same trouble and we almost lost
our
nerve completely, and we were tossing a coin to see who would have to
do
the
next landing!

Now that we have the Rebel in the hangar I searched for answers and
have

found that the centre pin in the wheel fork has come loose which has
allowed the tailwheel to pivot just as it wished! This is what caused
the strange
handling. This is the standard MAM tailwheel as supplied in the kit.

Has anyone had this same experience, or can offer anyway to secure
this pin? The pin is secured by two 1/8" roll pins but there is
nothing to locate them
into the pin. The main casting is also worn and the pin is a sloppy
fit.
Does anyone have a fix?

I would appreciate some advice and assistance.

Apart from all that, the Rebel cruises at 85 knots and has an average
petrol burn 20 litres an hour. This is with two large pilots, lots of
fuel and as
much luggage as we can get in and still shut the doors!

I looked around a bit... I couldn't find a "home page" for Scott (google.com). Some information on the Aircraft Spruce site listed below. It appears that the 3200 is frequently used on the Cessna 170 and the 3400 on the 180. Does anyone know the web site for the Scott? On the other sites it shows a dramatically different design for the stinger. One issue is the wheel the other is the stinger attach points. There needs to be more give or compliance in the stinger. Has anyone looked at how this is done on other aircraft?
