Spring gear carry through and floor panel attach

Post by N.Smith » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:38 am

Hi Mike

I very nearly ran into the problem of the holes at #11 already on the
forward FUS 5 when I came to attach my floor. The floor does indeed fit to
the front FUS 5...if you cleco the nose side panels and firewall together
you will see the natural lie position for the floor, and now before I drill
anything up above #40 I stop and think and look at pictures of completed
aircraft and convince myself there is nothing extra to attach to this area
before completion. This has saved me riveting up sections and then having to
drill them out afterwards to fit another part on top several pages/chapters
later !! You'll realise this after a while...just because the manual says to
rivet it up, you may still have to undo part of it again later to add
another bit. I've a good collection of photos of Jim Jeffries Elite (not on
this list), and Walters Rebel on amphibs. I use these on a regular basis to
see what it looks like on a completed plane (I'm the first tailwheel/amphib
Elite in the UK). I've also printed out all the pictures I can find on the
web, and they all help to increase the confidence factor before I drill up
above #40 or rivet.

Good luck with the build, it's still great fun :-)

Ok thanks, Al told me it is 5/8" and that looks about right. How about that
forward floor skin, does it attach with one row of rivets in the front fus5?
I'm not sure on its location. The manual just says cleco it on. Well, the
holes in the front fus5 are already at no.11 across the bottom per earler
pages of manual so it doesn't just cleco on. Also the manual says to rivet
the main floor to the bottom of the fus5 a while back also, but I didn't.
I like your website!
Thanks,

Mike,

I'll get the angle measurement tomorrow off 612e, and post it. Mine were
cut to the angle of the carry through I took out that was wrecked ... from
what I can tell, it just needs to be able to make the forward side skin
angle change forward of the door post. Anyway, I'll send you a good angle
tomorrow.

Cheers, Bob 612e

I'm full of questions today,
Does anyone know what the angle or the dimension is that needs to be cut
off of the front 2" carry through square tube on each side to match
needed profile of body? I would like to cut it before mounting rather
than having to deal with it in place. The manual says to cut it but
doesn't give any reference of how much.
Thanks,
Mike Betti
