Flight Note vs Flight Plan in Canada?

Folks,

Question on flying in Canada. I understand that it is
mandatory/required by CARS that one always file a flight plan prior to
taxi/takeoff. But, I've also heard that one can file a "flight note"
with your friend, wife, whomever, and not file an official flight plan
with Nav Canada. I assume, as you folks are under a fee-based system,
that if you file an official flight plan with Nav Canada that costs $$,
whereas, of course, the "flight note" is free.

Hence, if you're just doing a scenic flight in the general area, or, if
you just don't want to file a formal flight plan, that's how you "file."

...just want to fly by the rules without getting all wrapped up in
paperwork...

On the other hand, I know that as I head up North in sparsely populated
areas it's just plain smart to file a formal flight plan.

Ted, they nail us for about $60 per year for our airplanes whether we use
the system or even talk on the radio. You can file as many, or as few,
flight plans as you want...no extra $.

If you are flying more the 25 miles from home, yes you either need a flight
note or a flight plan. The stupidity of this is I know more guys that have
died within this 25 mile radius and one they still haven't found almost 3
years later, than guys that had filed flight plans. During some parts of
your route, when you know someone will be at the other end, just advise you
will be there by such and such a time. Problem when you get up the coast is
you may not have cell phone coverage and if you can't call out to tell them
you are delayed or have arrived okay...an unnecessary search may persue.
Same goes for filing by radio though. If you happen to get out of range to
close your flight plan...what do you do? Oh yah....that's what that
$200/month sat phone is for!

Hi Ted !

We use a "Flight Itinerary" - a list of places we might stop,
and dates. This is left with a "responsible person", who will
call the nearest ATC office/FSS/tower, if we don't show up
or call within ____ days/hours of the last stop.

This works just fine, and leaves lots of flexibility ! ;-)

You're right, though - a flight plan is a good idea heading
into the boonies. You can specify the SAR Time - from 1 hour to
2 or 3 days, if you need flexibility....

Ted, looks like the US guys get lucky. This years rate for us CDN's is $72
for the year. "foreign" aircraft get billed quarterly based on the first
date you use the system at 25% of the Canadian rate so no extra charge for
you. Looks like a whole $18Cdn for you to use the system unless I'm missing
something!

Ted,
I recommend using the flight plan. Cost is only $16.00 C per quarter and
they give good service. On the way back from Alaska I had to run from bad
weather and it was very reassuring when they called me on the radio and
asked where I was and if they could update my arrival time.
