That is not an Elite! It's a Rebel...and FWIW...you don't need that high
of
a wedge taken out of the frame to clear the strut.

Elite doors

Post by british thunder » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:35 am

Hi all
the wedge works great
but you better match the top of the window to the same profile as the door
if you want to put the door up when the window is open. this is if you want
opening windows in your door.
don't ask how I know this.
well I'm back in the air now, all went well on the reassembly, other than a
slight vibration that I think I tracked down to the spinner.
Will be rebalanced on Monday.
I still have the "speed"cowl for a o320 for sale cheep if any one is
interested?
can't make the meting on the weekend, I will be at the cottage.
I might do a fly by on "tally ho field" on Sunday the 5th If the weather
permits is there a pond to land in??
thanks again for the help over the winter.

There's a pond - but I think you would have to be a helicopter. Call on
123.2 when you're in the area so that I can get my video camera out for
your fly past.

Cheers

Elite doors

Post by Bob Patterson » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:35 am

That brings up an important point -

You DO definitely want opening windows in your doors !!!

Just imagine trying to push that whole door up against the
pressure of 10 feet or more of water, hanging upside down,
if you flip over on landing !!! -- THE most common water
accident, and the reason for high insurance rates on amphibs !

If the window is open, you could just dive right out the
window, or at least, it will reduce the pressure problem ...
A good reason for opening the windows when landing on water.

One easy way to do this is to use the same top hinge pin for
both the door and the window - just use alternating 'hanger loops'
on the hinge.

Elite doors

Post by Bob Patterson » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:35 am

You'd be amazed at what you can do when you're desperate !! :-)

BUT - that's a good reason to wear SOS-Penders - type "life
jackets" ---- It's almost impossible to get out quickly wearing
a full cheapie live vest (and, of course, we all DO wear our vests
when landing ! ;-) :-) ) The compact, inflateable, Sospenders
are definitely "A Good Thing"(tm) if you do a lot of float flying !
