Actually, I would prefer the welded tank but that is not a viable option
on the Rebel / Elite for structural reasons. I do like the Vans option
of a structural built up removable tank but that has to be designed in
also. The wet wing is a good option and the one Darryl chose. They are
used in certified aircraft such as the Cessna Cardinal as well.

Does anyone know about putting 120gal tanks in the moose or are they
finding problems going out 6 bays in each wing.I am feeding a M-14 or
would it be better 5 bays??

Hi Bill !

I don't think too many are doing those large tanks - it's quite a chore
to seal around the strut attach area. A lot easier to stay inboard one bay !

I flew the M-14 across Canada with 70 gal. tanks - no problem !
And I think it's been to Alaska in the same configuration ....
I think 80 is probably enough, but some have gone to 100. It's a lot
more flexible to just carry some fuel in cans in back, for the few times
you'll be away up north. .... Just leave the extra on the dock, and
go into those little lakes nice & light !! ;-)

across between the sixth and seventh rib? Where did the filler neck go? ie
which compartment.

From the MAM website the "long range" tanks seem to be 100 gallons now, not
120 anymore. I suspect due to the hassle with boxing out the strut attach
point.

Mine, like most of the fast builds so far (at least up through the 220ish
serial #'s), are the 120 gallons. They go out 6 bays. They box out the
strut attach and make a dry box so that last bay is a little less than the
others. On a lot of the early fast builds this area was prone to leaks.
Not sure if some of the early (mine anyway) fast builds really got leak
checked at the factory, I had leaks in every bay, had to add inspection
holes to fix.

The filler port is in the 5th bay out on the 120 tanks (this keeps it up on
the "top", if out is 6th it would have to be farther aft along the chord due
to the box around the strut attach). We added a second filler neck in the
third bay out so we can reach it on floats from the fuselage steps.

I didi the 120 upgrade from 80. I used the full sixth bay sealing up the
strut attach brakets. Also cut an inspection hole in each bay so I can
inspect strut attach from inside fuel tank if need be..Wasn't too
difficult this way but would be a lot of extra work if you put in the
false wall and doublers so that the strut is dry. If strut ever starts
geting loose I'll know by the wet look ;-)

My buddy just skipped the 6th bay and built outboard of that bay the same
way the inner bays are built. He connected the inboard and outboard bays
with aluminum tubing. I don't remember how many bays out he went. I do
know he used thicker skins on the whole wing. Keep in mind that he was
toying with the idea of using a prop-jet and was preparing the plane for
that possibility. I would be very careful about the stresses imposed on the
wing with fuel out that far. I can't imagine needing more than the 80
gallons I have in mine. Jerry cans in the back for extreme remote
destinations works just fine as I learned on a trip from Fairbanks to
Seattle in a C-180 on straight floats.

My personal opinion is that about 100 gallons would be just right. 120 would
only be useful if you are the only one in the plane and never on floats.

I find 85 gallons to be all I can really carry and still have floats and
people. The other note is that my digital fuel totalizer always works best
in my mind when I start with full tanks and reset the totalizer knowing it
is correct. If I had 120 gallon tanks I would start to wonder after a while
if my fuel totalizer had the right number or not. Just a thought. When I
need more than 85 gallons of usable my float can hold 4 x 6 = 24 gallons of
gerry cans - I have done this once. Even with the m14 I have 5 hours.

I will be installing the bottom tank skin this weekend. Instructions say
to install skin, flip wing over and seal up corners, etc, set 24 hours,
and then put some gas in it. So what is everyone using or doing about
this step? I heard windsheild washer from one builder. How much do you
dump in also? After completing the tank are you doing the psi test also?

I put mine outside on sawhorses and filled it up a gallon at atime so that I
could see the leaks (NONE)
Then I put it in my car and truck
