Cessna pitot tube
Cessna pitot tube
Is anyone satisfactorily using a Cessna heated pitot tube? If so where
did you locate it?
From the archives, I know that Bob doesn't recommend the Cessna probe.
The one that I have here has a 1/8" dia inlet although it could be
enlarged. To my surprise it also has a 1/16" water drain at the bottom
rear which I expect would release some of the ram pressure and make the
ASI tend to read low. Has anyone tried plugging the drain? Or tilting
the probe down?
The bracket that I have would place the probe 2.5" below the wing
although I'd prefer about twice that.

There are pitot tubes listed periodically on ebay - you just have to
watch for them.
I have just aluminum tube projecting about a foot forward of the wing
and wonder if anyone has a method to electrically heat such a unit?

Ken, have you checked out www.gretzaero.com/ for a longer mounting

Yes thanks Lonnie.
I was thinking of trying to squeeze a length of 1.5" aluminum tubing
into the appropriate shape or trying it as is first.

I bought a one foot length of streamline 4130 tubing from ACS and mounted it
up inside to the side of a l-edge rib. Fits the tube prefectly. I have some
long lengths of streamline from my Norseman parts collection. Will see if
it's the right size for a heated p tube..but I think one size is too small
and other is too big.

I bought the heated pitot, mast, mounting plate as a unit from a wrecker and
installed it as close to the original (Cessna) setup as possible - just
outboard of the strut attach point. I just used a doubler on the wing skin,
right next to a rib. It's on an Elite, so the skins are 0.025".
Performance is still TBD, as the aircraft has not yet flown (but getting
close).

You can pick up a piece of faired tubing in steel that is a good fit at
AC Spruce or in aluminum at Wicks. I made the mount for our Elite from
the steel.

I used the RV extension kit as sold by AS&S. Also mounted through one of
the fwd inspection covers in the strut area.
The streamlined tubing has a flange welded to it and is chromed. Looks
nice but Wayne could weld the same up for a lot less I'm sure..
My PT is 28v and still not sure if I want 12v or 28v. I had gone with 28
as the Garmin 430 initally only came at 28v but it's now also 12v.
